What is Wrong With People?

Most of you have probably realized by now that BoogieDowner likes to focus on positive stories in the press about our oft-maligned borough...

However, today we are shocked not only by a story of violent crime against a kid, but more so by the public's reaction to that crime.

Daily News' Edgar Sandoval and Alison Gendar report that a high school sophomore was attacked for putting his backpack on a man's BMW while waiting for the bus in Throgs Neck on his way to school. The 16-year-old, Gabriel Quinones, apparently didn't apologize for putting his bag on the car when the owner jumped out of his car and started screaming at him. A verbal confrontation ensued, followed by an attack which left Gabriele stabbed in the chest and slashed five or six times on the face and neck. He's in critical but stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center.

At the time of this post, there are 31 comments on the Daily News story... Click here to check them out. They are truly frightening. The majority of the commenters seem to indicate that they think its vaguely wrong that the maniac so violently attacked the kid BUT that the kid should learn to respect other people's property. Just recently there have been a few commenters who are sane individuals who think that the attacker is the devil incarnate for what he's done.

It's not even as if the attacker caught the kid slashing the tires of his precious BMW (not that that would be reason for such a violent response either)... The kid had his damn backpack on the hood. A bit obnoxious? Yes. Worthy of a life-threatening attack? No. Truly disgusting.

The commenters on the Daily News website aren't always the most intelligent or caring people. Personally, I think the Daily News should monitor comments very closely, as sometimes they are incredibly hateful/inappropriate and even racist.
