On Friday, March 11, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc. celebrated the proclamation of March 11th to April 12th, 2011 as Garifuna Heritage Month 2011, in observance of the 214th anniversary of the exile of the Garifuna people from St Vincent. New York City is home to the largest Black Caribs (Garifunas) population outside of Honduras in Central America, an estimated 200,000 live in the South Bronx, Brownsville, East New York of Brooklyn, and on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
