NEW YORK’S BRIGHTEST STUDENTS COMPETE FOR THE CHANCE TO BEE-COME SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE CHAMPION

There is a major spelling bee today. Sponsors of the event include the Daily News,

NEW YORK’S BRIGHTEST STUDENTS COMPETE FOR THE CHANCE TO BEE-COME
SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE CHAMPION

Winners of the 47th Annual Daily News New York Spelling Bee will represent NYC
at the National Spelling Bee in June

WHEN: Day One - Thursday, March 10
Day Two - Friday, March 11
10:00 A.M. start time both days (each contest will last approximately 90 minutes)

WHAT: Finalists from public and private elementary schools located in the New York City metropolitan area face off on Thursday, March 10th and Friday, March 11th, 2011 at in the 47th Annual Daily News New York City Spelling Bee.

Following several rounds of elimination on each day, only two students – one per day – will be crowned Daily News New York City Spelling Bee champions to represent New York in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1st and 2nd in Washington, D.C.

First place winner will receive a trophy and a laptop computer; second place will receive a plaque and an IPod from P.C. Richard & Son. Both will receive round trip airfare, hotel and expenses for the National Spelling Bee from the Daily News, and four passes to the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Among the 113 competitors this year, there are several remarkable individuals including the Zestanakis duo whose sibling rivalry doesn’t need to be spelled out and Sanjana Mohan Malla, who has danced her way into the Guinness Book of World Records at only ten years old. Malla was one of 2,800 dancers to achieve the record for the largest Kuchipudi dance, performed in Hyderabad, India. Kellie and Nick Zestanakis, siblings from Queens, have competed against each other before, most recently at a Queens Spelling Bee where Nick out-spelled Kellie to take 3rd place.

All finalists will receive a $25 gift certificate from P.C Richard & Son. Special thanks to Municipal Credit Union, Medieval Times and P.C. Richard & Son for sponsoring this event.
