The New York Botanical Garden: Kick-off of Kids Gardening Season begins April 2nd

Here is an announcement from the NY Botanical Gardens about the beginning of their 2011 gardening season. The program planned sounds like a great event for families with young children.

Please enjoy the photo above. It was taken at the gardens last week. I encourage everyone to become a member and use the gardens, like I do, as a second back yard. The wooded paths and flower gardens are stunning.

MEDIA ALERT

Kids Kick-off 2011 Gardening Season
at The New York Botanical Garden, April 2

Family Garden Opens Saturday for 25th Anniversary Year,
Featuring Wake Up, Garden!-Themed Activities All Month

WHAT: At The New York Botanical Garden, gardening season officially begins April 2 with the 2011 seasonal opening of the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden. Plants and imaginations grow and visitors are encouraged to get their hands dirty in daily hands-on activities. With help from parents, volunteers, and staff, children dig for worms, weed, compost, plant seeds, tend, harvest, and learn about foods grown locally and around the world. Activities change monthly and take place from 1:30–5:30 p.m.

April 2–May 6 features gardening fun based on the theme Wake Up, Garden! Help get the garden ready for spring by planting seeds, making compost, and digging for worms. Head to the meadow to clear the garden paths of sticks and twigs and recycle these into a nature craft. Learn how to play the game “pick-up-sticks” and make your own bundle so you can play at home.

Visit nybg.org for details.
