Photo of the Day

Catalpa Bar, E. 233rd Street

A friend of ours made the mistake of calling this fine establishment
(which is actually referred to as an IRA bar in this interesting piece)
to ask what they had on tap...The following conversation ensued:
BD Friend: I just wanted to find out what you have on tap.
Bartender: You want to know what we have on tap?
BD Friend: Yes.
Bartender: Just my dick, pissing in the sink!
Laughter in the background...

It's a local place...you get local people...you can't expect much more. You probably would have gotten a far more angry/derogatory answer had you sounded ethnic just to make sure you know you aren't welcome there. Don't believe me? Try it.

Why give them the satisfaction of printing their vulgarity? Do they deserve free advertising?

We thought this exchange was rather hilarious, which is why we posted it. It speaks nicely to the local flavor of some of the old school watering holes here in the BoogieDown (particularly in Woodlawn). If the friend who told us the story wasn't offended by the bartender, we don't see why anyone else should be.
Cheers!

Anonymous: With bartenders like that, and managers that encourage that behavior, I don't think this article provides any positive advertising for this place...and quite honestly...they don't need or want any advertising for that matter. They have their local customers, and prefer to keep it that way.

Ha! Everyone's so uptight in their lives these days. Gotta admire that brazen wit.

I would agree that it is "brazen wit" in this case, but it quickly turns to hate-filled comments when it's someone who "doesn't belong" who mistakenly walks in to get a beer.

Yeah, you should walk in there and ask for an English beer. Or a wine cooler.

Not many people actualy think they can get their hands on English beer. I will try next time I pop in.
