Lowercase Perry AvenueSeems like such a small change, but both my husband and I
noticed it right away...
the new Perry Avenue street sign contains lowercase letters.
Here's what one of the Perry Avenue signs looked like before:

Pastries and Pols
On Sunday, September 12, United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. stopped by Egidio’s Pastry Shoppe in the Belmont section of the Bronx, where bakery owner Carmela Lucciola (left) taught the pair how to fill cannoli. Senator Gillibrand and Borough President Diaz would later visit with constituents at Arthur Avenue’s annual “Ferragosto” celebration.

Photo of the Day: No BBQing Signs Up On the Mosh

Better Late than Never...Thanks Parks Department!
We hope that these signs will dissuade the parkway users from making the Mosh less safe and a little dirtier with illegal grilling.

Groundbreaking at Part of the Solution (POTS)
This past Monday, 5/17, the folks over at POTS broke ground on an
expanded facility that will serve over 10,000 people annually.
The new facility will also allow the social service organization
to provide a greater array of community services, including medical
and dental clinics, after school tutoring,
a "supermarket" style food pantry, and nutritional education. From left to right:

Why Would You Cover That?
I was walking along Hull Avenue the other day and checking out the houses along the block when I noticed that a piece of siding/cover of sorts had come down and exposed the following gorgeous (albeit beat up) architectural detail:Here's a full shot of the home:And here's a shot of the house next door, whose owners chose to leave the detailing uncovered:

The Alewife
The Bronx River Alliance reports that alewife fish have returned
to the Bronx River for the second year in a row since the species
was reintroduced four years ago. The alewife was declared a "species of concern"
by the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service back in 2006.
Bronx River Conservation Alliance Crew Member Mildred Torres
holds an alewife that returned to the Bronx River on Sunday, April 12th, 2010.

Catalpa Bar, E. 233rd Street

A friend of ours made the mistake of calling this fine establishment
(which is actually referred to as an IRA bar in this interesting piece)
to ask what they had on tap...The following conversation ensued:
BD Friend: I just wanted to find out what you have on tap.
Bartender: You want to know what we have on tap?
BD Friend: Yes.
Bartender: Just my dick, pissing in the sink!
Laughter in the background...

Somebody should make the owner of this house
an offer they can't refuse and restore it to their heart's desire...
