Fairway Grand Opening Today!

The ever-popular Fairway supermarket is celebrating the grand opening of its new Pelham Manor location today at 9am. We first reported that Fairway was opening a store as close to the Bronx as you can actually get without being IN the Bronx back in December while the Armory supermarket war was waging. It's too bad we can't have such a great amenity within the borders of our borough, but it will be nice to have the opportunity to poach another one of Westchester's shopping options...

This is good stuff but let's not forget about the South Bronx Food Co-op...
http://www.sbxfc.org

we beat whole foods and fairway prices for the same items any day!

Also please note, the South Bronx Food Cooperative is not corporately owned but it is owned by members of the community and we do not profit from the sales whatsoever. No one makes a dime and all the profits are passed on to members and non-members alike through our competitive prices!

I like the Food Co-op but there is not enough in there to make it a destination supermarket. It is too small and the products are too limited.

I am all for supporting local businesses, and this one is worthwhile, but until they GREATLY expand, I rarely go there, if ever. And if you are not within walking distance, there is no point in going.

If you want the SBx coop to be bigger and better, become a member and help out! = )

The coop responds to its members and its shoppers. If there's something that you think should be sold there, go in and ask if they'll consider stocking it.

I have asked to expand their selection of fresh fruits, meats, yogurts, cereals, juices, breads, vegetables, and also to introduce organic freshly prepared foods.

I have also donated to the establishment as I do not have the time necessary to be a member. It is not a supermarket where you can actually shop. As it stands right now, it is a place that you can walk to, pick up a couple of items to support them, and that's about it. I do my part, but I can see why most other people in the neighborhood don't shop there.

Hi GWAC

Exactly -- It's not a supermarket. It's a collective, and it works well when it's members get involved.

Example: I also wanted to see some more meat sold at the coop, but we weren't stocking meat because we had no freezer. So I decided to seek out the other carnivores in the coop and organize a collective purchase or chickens and steaks from one of our meat suppliers in PA. The meat arrived a couple weeks later.

It was that simple -- and it didn't require any major time commitment. I did most of the organizing by email over breakfast.

It's easy to think that you doesn't have the time to get involved, but my experience has been that the time required is less (and the benefits are greater) than you would expect.

This Fairway might as well be in the BX it's so close (and really easy to get to). The co-op is great but for those further north, Fairway is a nice option too!
