Let the Extortion Begin: Espada's Son with Cushy, $120K, Made Up Job

The Daily Intel is reporting that NY State Senate Majority Leader, Pedro Espada (I just died a little when I typed that), has procured a $120,000/year "job" for his son, Pedro G. Espada. The new Senate gig for the younger Pedro is "deputy director of intergovernmental relations." What the fuck is that made-up job?

It turns out the job is indeed made up; the younger Pedro isn't replacing anyone - this is a newly created job.

Hiring freeze, anyone? Horrible state-wide budget crisis, anyone?

The Faustian deal the Senate Democrats made with this lout is going to bite them in their collective asses.

Great Banh Mi and Pho in the BoogieDown

In the shadow of the Kingsbridge Armory can be found a hidden culinary gem of the Bronx. Formerly the location of the somewhat ballyhooed World of Taste Seafood (on Yelp, and the Village Voice, and visited by Baron Ambrosia on Bronx Flavor), the newly named Pho Mien Tay at 2614 Jerome Avenue does not disappoint.

The missus, the little one, and I took a stroll on Sunday afternoon to sample the goods of this Vietnamese delight. First let me say that the staff is incredibly friendly. While we were confusedly looking at the menu, the cook came over and took us under his gastronomic southeast Asian wing and suggested what turned out to be some fantastic dishes.

We split a big (enormous!) bowl of beef pho ($6.00), which is a delicious soup with noodles, incredibly thin and tender slices of beef (so thin and tender that our 18 month old gobbled them up greedily), and vegetables. I had a a pork banh mi (only $3.50), which is a sandwich stuffed with veggies, cilantro, pork leaf, and a spicy sauce on a crusty French baguette. The missus had bun thit nuong ($6.00), which is grilled pork with rice vermicelli and veggies. All three dishes were unbelievably good and large portions - well worth the walk over from Bedford Park. If you're out of walking distance, Pho Mien Tay is only a block south of the Kingsbridge Road 4 train stop. The food is worth the trip, people.

You should also try the Vietnamese iced coffee - it's strong, sweet, and reminded me of caffeinated chocolate milk, even though there is no chocolate in it.

The second best part of the dining experience (after the deliciousness, of course) is how affordable everything was. In total, with pho that could have served three people, a banh mi that was twice as large as I thought it would be (picture of banh mi shows half of the portion - hunger got the best of patience), a monster bowl of bun thit nuong, an iced coffee, and a soda cost only $18.25.

While you're over in this hood you should stop by the Edgar Allen Poe Cottage as well; it's right down Kingsbridge at the Concourse. Or you could go for a stroll in St. James Park, which is right next to Pho Mien Tay.

Pho Mien Tay is located at 2614 Jerome Avenue. Phone number is 718-220-8212 or 718-584-5228. They deliver. CASH ONLY, but they have an ATM onsite.

Daily News Content Continues to Extole Virtues of Bronx Real Estate... But Why Would It Pay for a Slogan and a Marketer?

As many of you have probably noticed, we've ceased posting our "Round'em Up" feature for a while... We've been away a bunch this summer and haven't had tons of time to devote to updating the blog, and keeping up with Bronx-related news stories has been a challenge.

We missed this Daily News article about a developer who actually doesn't seem evil who is doing well for himself rehabbing properties in the BoogieDown, and wanted to share it with you. Click here to check it out. This piece is actually part of a larger real estate series called 'Bronx Special: You Have to See It To Believe It!' Okay, I'll admit, I added the exclamation point in that title myself... but I had to. The title was so cheesy that I could just picture flipping on my tv at 2am and seeing Erik Estrada standing proudly in front of Tracy Towers yelling, "The Bronx -You Have to See It to Believe It!"

Daily News also recently had a nice feature on Silver Beach Gardens, a waterfront cooperative community nestled between the Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridges in the Bronx. Interestingly enough, they beat the New York Times to the punch, as the Gray Lady featured Silver Beach Gardens and its neighboring Edgewater Park community in their 'Living In' column just a few days later. There are some other Bronx real estate items from the Daily News here and here as well.

All this recent press has the ole BD wondering aloud once again: does the Daily News have some sort of stake in the BoogieDown's real estate game? Their general coverage of the Bronx is always pretty awesome, but the recent uptick in positive real estate coverage has us a bit baffled.

We're certainly not complaining, but we would love to know why the News ran a piece a few weeks ago about a real estate marketer (David Williams, Seventh Art Group) who recently built a fluffy website as part of his efforts to rebrand the Bronx. We're all about folks doing their part to help the BoogieDown's public relations issues, but we were really surprised to see the following disclaimer at the bottom of the 'Bronx - Think Again' website:

Listing of the Day: Fancy Fedders in Kingsbridge Heights

2792 Sedgwick Avenue, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms - $240,000

This building caught the eye of the missus as she was biking to the gym in Marble Hill a while back, but this is the first time I've come across a listing in the building.

This particular unit is not a huge 2 bedroom at 774 square feet, but you do get some bang for your real estate buck here. There are 2 bathrooms (very uncommon in the BoogieDown's apartment stock), 2 balconies, a storage unit in the basement, a washer/dryer in the unit itself, and what seems to be a parking garage/lot on-site (but I'm sure it's wait listed or the listing agent would have pimped the availability pretty hard).

The balconies are a very nice amenity, and the little patches of green out front (even though rather small) help to make the building pop with domesticity. A lot of newish Fedders construction can look like something out of occupied Warsaw circa 1955 (apologies to all industrial Soviet architecture lovers out there), but this manages to break the mold a bit. $240K might be a little high in this market, but this seems to be a quality unit tucked away in a little nook of Kingsbridge Heights.

You'd be in walking or biking distance to the Target, Planet Fitness, Starbucks, Marshalls, etc. down in Marble Hill. There is some shopping on Kingsbridge Road. You'd be pretty close to Lehman College as well for cultural/educational offerings. The Kingsbridge Armory (with whatever ends up occupying the space) would also be in walking distance.

Transportation would be east to the 4 train at Kingsbridge Road and Jerome Avenue or head west to the 1 train at 225th Street and Broadway.

One last thing popped out to the the ole BD as he inspected the pics accompanying the listing. If you look closely at the pics that feature the television it appears to be a cardboard dummy TV. The best shot is in pic #9 after the jump. What's your vote? Methinks it's a staging prop, but sometimes scouring the interweb for LODs fries my brain and eyes a bit. Please let me know your vote in the comments.

Photo of the Day

Here's the crew from the Southern Bronx River Watershed Alliance standing in the middle of the Sheridan Expressway during rush hour on 7/15 at 5:30pm. They hope to convert the seldom used road into open space and housing.
Good stuff!

New Low for Graffiti "Artists" UPDATED x2

We here at BoogieDowner have no problem with graffiti as a creative outlet, so long as it is done in a respectful, artistic way in appropriate areas (e.g. Bronx-based Tats Cru's work found all over the City). However, the recent uptick in ugly tags around Bedford Park has us feeling a bit frustrated. In recent months we've noticed more graffiti not only on mailboxes, garages, and storefronts, but also on residential homes. Didn't there used to be some sort of unspoken agreement that graffiti writers wouldn't hit people's private homes back in the day, or am I imagining that?

Well, when we pulled onto the Mosholu Parkway after exiting the Bronx River Parkway this past Sunday, we were disgusted to see that taggers had vandalized the beautiful World War I monument at the Hull Avenue intersection. What always stood as a beautiful commemorative piece now looks like this:
This is an outrageous display of brazen disregard for the honor of our country and those who put their lives on the line to fight for it. So what do we do to fix this problem?

First off, Bedford Park residents need to call 311 ASAP to log complaints about the defacement of the World War I monument. Once you get the complaint number at the end of the phone call, please send an email to Community Board 7 (info@bronxcb7.info) asking them to please follow up on the issue and provide the complaint number you were given. Be forewarned: my 311 call took a whopping 20 minutes to complete. The operators are having trouble understanding what space the monument is located within and Mosholu Parkway isn't showing up in their system. The key is to keep telling them that the land is maintained by the Parks Department, that way they know where to refer the complaint. Tell them it's the intersection of Mosholu Parkway and Hull Avenue.

If you see graffiti around your neighborhood that needs to be cleaned up, get involved with local community groups and alert your local Councilmember (they can help through the Graffiti Free NYC program) to the problems.

There's a vacant garage here on 201st Street that is a huge target for graffiti and we were always completely frustrated by it. So we asked Bedford Mosholu Community Association what we could do about it and were happy to learn that they would secure paint and supplies for us to use to clean the garage doors up. We painted the place, and after about a month it was hit by taggers again. So we simply went right out and painted over the tags immediately, and it's been about another month or so and it's still clean. It's kind of fun - we monitor it like it's our baby and love walking past it and seeing it cleaned up. Here she is, in all her clean glory:

(We're eventually going to paint the brick as well )

If you see graffiti on the uptick in your hood, get involved. Talk to your elected officials, community groups, or even your building's super. You just never know what resources are out there to help you get sites cleaned up.

Update #1: A statement from Mr. Fernando Tirado, CB7 District Manager:
If people go to www.BronxCB7.info and click on the “Submit a Complaint” link, not only can they report complaints to us 24 hours a day, they can also get a reference number for their record and call or e-mail us to request the status of their complaint. The database also allows people to input their 311 complaint number, which we strongly encourage people to do because it gets registered on the city’s system and we can research the status online.

Update #2: The monument has been cleaned!!!!!!!!
This must be a citywide record for graffiti cleanup. The monument was vandalized just this past weekend, and sometime today, Tuesday, the site was powerwashed and restored to its former glory! Big ups to Community Board 7 and the Parks Department for their diligence concerning this matter. Here she is, all cleaned up:

Listing of the Day: Bedford Park Rental [UPDATE: Fraud Alert!]

UPDATE: Big thanks to loyal reader Newburgh Restoration for getting to the bottom of this. It turns out to be a scam. There was some return email about missionary work and London, sending keys and first month free. $700/month for a one bedroom in Bedford Park did sound awefully low - too good to be true because it isn't. The missus also pointed out that the sunken living room pic is not from those apartments (we've been inside for open houses).

E. 201st Street and Decatur Avenue, 1 Bedroom - $700/month

Anyone familiar with the hood will notice this new-ish construction that a developer was trying to sell about a year or two ago. It appears that the units have gone unsold and have been on the rental market for a while.

The building itself is not the worst Fedders monstrosity I've ever seen (it's not even the worst in the hood). There are cute little balconies/terraces for everyone but the ground floor. The makeup of the building seems decent enough - not overly rowdy. There's a Mexican family, who use indoor seating as outdoor seating, a hipster with a small dog, a grand dame Puerto Rican woman who decorates her balcony with plastic ivy vines and lights.

The hood has some pretty cool stuff to offer. You'd be near the Mosholu Parkway, which serves as a long green park (with a road) that connects Bronx Park to Van Cortlandt Park. You'd be near the Bronx Greenway and great biking. The Botanical Garden is pretty damned cool as well, and until October there is a twice weekly farmer's market at the Garden.

There is decent shopping on Bedford Park Boulevard, a bit more on 204th Street across Mosholu Parkway, and yet even more down on Fordham Road. If you want really fresh and quality products like bread, cheeses, meat, fish, pasta, or produce, I'd take the 15-20 minute walk to Arthur Avenue or ride my bike over.

Fordham University and Lehman College always provide cultural offerings to the hood like lectures, talks, plays, and musical performances. Fordham provides pretty decent college sports to the nabe.

The hood is saturated in transportation with the B/D at Bedford Park Boulevard and the Concourse, and the 4 train at Bedford Park Boulevard and Jerome Avenue. The Botanical Garden also has a Metro North stop.
