Round'em Up

And we're back! Here are some Bronx-related stories which we've rounded up for you, our lovely readers, while trolling the interweb with our horse and lasso this fine morning:

It turns out residents who live near the intersection of the Cross Bronx Expressway and Bronx River Parkway, which is know as the worst bottleneck in the country, find the unending traffic sights to be somewhat therapeutic [New York Times]

More on the lawsuit that the tenants of 2710 Bainbridge Avenue have filed against their slumlord [NY1 and Daily News]

This week's 'Living In' focused on Country Club, a somewhat insular waterside community located on the Throgs Neck peninsula [New York Times]

A profile of Lloyd Ultan, the Bronx borough historian [Daily News]

Low income residents in the South Bronx can now take advantage of free broadband internet access, as well as low-cost phone/television service and free video surveillance, through an initiative developed by South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation [Daily News]
BD Note: It would be wonderful if this initiative were available in some form to all Bronxites. Even if the cost were on par with what Cablevision charges for phone/internet/tv, I'd love to give my money to someone other than them.
"Cash and Carry Larry" Seabrook just spent $20,000 of taxpayer money to set up a new district office on Boston Road...his staff cites high heating costs as the reason they need to leave their White Plains Road office [New York Post]

Many Bronxites seem to be coming out to fight the proposed "soda tax" [legistativegazette.com, Daily News, and BxNN]
BD Note: The ignorance surrounding this particular issue drives me insane. Why in the world are people fighting to keep something that's unhealthy to begin with more affordable? Call me crazy, but if in order to solve the budget crisis the state imposes a tax that I can actually AVOID PAYING if I want to, I'm a happy camper.
New York State's budget woes could put an indefinite halt to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge renovation [BxNN]

A sophomore at Fordham University is a race car driver who has his sights set on NASCAR [New York Times]

The Silver Fox has all this week's juicy gossip, including a tip regarding a typo in the press release that the Northwest Bronx Democrats sent out announcing that Mark Rodriguez has announced his "candicacy" for Carl Heastie's northeast Bronx assembly seat [Daily News]

Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. and Senate Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson have been ordered by a judge to comply with a subpoena for all documents related to the controversial Aqueduct "racino" deal [New York Post]

Although the national unemployment rate went down, Bronxites are still struggling to find work [Bronx Ink]

According to a recent U-Haul study, the Bronx was the top growth city of 2009 [marketwatch.com]

Coverage of two sister exhibits dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement at the Bronx Museum of the Arts [NY1]

A Bronx college student will be working with Congress up on Capitol Hill as part of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's (CHCI) first ever spring Congressional Internship Program [BxNN]

There will be a bike ride in memory of Megan Charlop this Saturday [BxNN]

Fare-beaters are still up to their old tricks on the Bx12 Select Bus [Daily News]

Regarding : intersection of the Cross Bronx Expressway and Bronx River Parkway. "Rugman" although I appreciate his small business is a contributer to the traffic woes on that side of the merging service road. He can easily go to the other side of the service road where there is a closed gas station and way more space even for cars to pull into. But alas No, he is determined to stay on the side that causes more traffic where there are 2 Exit Ramps, 1 Entry Ramp, A U-Turn connection to the west bound Cross Bronx, A Busy Gas Station as well as the service pass through road all within Less Than A Quarter of a mile distance of each other, Where many people are caught like deer in headlights because they are not sure where to go or are trying to cut across 3 lanes to get the their desired side. All happening while the slow as molasses traffic creeps through that section of the Cross Bronx, due to the even more On Ramps a mile down the west bound side. I guess sine the drivers are sort of trapped it makes for good business.

For the soda tax, maybe they should just make it equivalent to the farm subsidies we paid for the corn they used in the corn syrup.

That would make it tax neutral, right? What drives me nuts is that right now, those of us not drinking soda are actually paying taxes to subsidize it!

Stop the craziness!!!

Re: the soda tax. It's what it represents. It is subsidizing more waste in Albany. What about all the other damn taxes we are paying in this highest taxed area of the country? Where did all of that go? Frankly I think we should avoid these sugary drinks, but I'm not supporting one more tax to support the Espadas of this State. Tighten your damn belt Albany!
