Bronx Zoo on Cake Boss This Evening

I'm not a fan of TLC's 'Cake Boss' myself, but apparently there are a bunch of people out there who will be interested to know that the Bronx Zoo will be featured on tonight's episode. Here are the details:

WCS’s Bronx Zoo is scheduled to be featured on TLC’s Cake Boss on Monday, January 25th at 9:00pm. The episode features Buddy Valastro creating a cake for the 110th anniversary of the Bronx Zoo. Don’t miss Jim Breheny and Pat Thomas talking about their expectations for the birthday cake; and Buddy and his staff interpreting the zoo visit and turning it into an amazing celebratory cake. Best of all is the cake delivery. Watch for WCS staff members, family and friends who celebrated the milestone event in Schiff Family Great Hall.

Cake Boss follows New Jersey baker Buddy Valastro as he creates larger-than-life cakes for various clients. His award-winning cake designs have been featured in The New York Times, The Food Network, Good Morning America, and many other programs.

The episode’s description is as follows: Chimps, Cinema & Crumb Cake
The crew channels their inner animal when they're asked to make a cake for the 110th birthday of the Bronx Zoo. They also make a cake for the grand opening of the only movie theater in Hoboken, once the client makes up their mind about the design.

Get Off Your Butts For a Good Cause... And Meet Tiki Barber!

The Wildlife Conservation Society will be sponsoring a 5K fun run/walk on Saturday, April 25th at the Bronx Zoo. Registration fees range from $30 to $18 and include general admission to the zoo! Click here to register.

Here are all the details straight from the ol' inbox:

The WCS Run for the Wild is a 5K fun run/walk for participants of all ages. This year’s run is dedicated to gorilla conservation, as 2009 has been designated the Year of the Gorilla by the United Nations. The Wildlife Conservation Society has been a leader in gorilla conservation since the 1950s. Today, WCS is the only organization of its kind working to save all four species of gorillas in nature, while showcasing gorillas at its award-winning Congo Gorilla Forest habitat at the Bronx Zoo.

Join Tiki Barber and other notables as they as they run, walk, trot, slither or hop at one of the “wildest” events of the year.

The WCS Run for the Wild will feature post-race activities including live music, yoga classes by YogaWorks, recycling brigades by TerraCycle, holistic massages, eco-friendly games and activities, plus a special “meet and greet” signing opportunity with Tiki Barber for WCS Run for the Wild participants only from 10 AM until Noon.

The Run for the Wild is a special fundraising effort which allows participants to make one-time pledges for gorillas, create customized individual and team fundraising pages, and register at the online site – www.wcsrunforthewild.org. Those who are unable to attend can participate through a virtual run at this site too!

Porcupine For Hire

You have to have a heart made of coal and nails not to appeal to lawmakers about proposed cuts to NY's Living Museums after watching this Wildlife Conservation Society advertisement:

Cutest Baby Ever?

You'd think I'd be talking about little Suri Cruise or even my own kid when I say "cutest baby ever."

But no, I'm actually talking about a sea lion over at the Bronx Zoo. She's just shy of six months old, and her name is Katie. Click here to check out a photo of her on Little BoogieDowner.

To ensure that the 'Living Museums' here in the Bronx continue to thrive, click here to fill out a quick and easy message protesting the proposed budget cuts to many of New York's cultual instituations, including the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, and Wave Hill.

Mother Earth is Soooo High Maintenance

This is old news at this point, but we at BoogieDowner just wanted to kvetch about it...

The damn holiday light show (usually held at night) at the Bronx Zoo has been replaced by a "Winter Wonderland" daylight festival in order to conserve energy and be greener (and undoubtedly save a nice chunk of greenbacks as well - pun intended... hehe - we're such clever writers we think we smell a special guest writer gig invitation from 30 Rock soon).

All's we have to say about this is boooooooooooo!!!! Er, I mean, excellent, nicely done Wildlife Conservation Society. CO2 emmissions are bad. Saving energy is good. But damn, what a bummer. We finally have a little bambina to trot out in her cute holiday clothes to see the light show, and now it's cancelled all because Mother Earth is about as high maintenance as Mariah Carey right now.

We'll just have to push our selfish little energy wasting thoughts aside and trot out the little one in her cute holiday clothes during the DAY instead. Our life is so hard.

I guess we'll just have to get our wasteful energy and lighting fix down an the annual residential yuletide spectacle on the corner of Westervelt and Pelham Parkway (pictured at right).

Editor's Note: We are not evil. We recycle, we bought the reusable shopping bags (admittedly half the time we forget to bring them when we go out shopping, but hey, we're trying), we refill our water bottles instead of drinking 20 Poland Springs a day, and we even use the fronts AND backs of the paper when we're printing something. Did I mention we joined the Norwood Food Co-op? At this point we're basically like the Brangelina of the green world, wouldn't you say? Except much better looking.

Listing of the Day: Pelham Parkway 2 Bedroom

$230K for this two bedroom, which also has 2 Bathrooms. Cross streets of Boston Post Rd. and Williamsbridge Rd. allow for easy access to beautiful Pelham Parkway and lots of greenery. If that's not enough green, take a walk to the New York Botanical Garden or hang with the animals at the Bronx Zoo (if you're conformist friends still think the Bronx is stuck in 1986 and won't come North of 125th Street).

Sunken living rooms are pretty cool, as are built in shelves with original detail. At $230K this two bedroom co-op is about right for the area.
There is lots of shopping on Williamsbridge Rd. and the 5 and 2 trains are close by. The only negative aspect is that the maintenance is a little high at $910/month. No doorman, and I don't think any common space, so I am not sure what this $910 goes to , but really, who has two bathrooms?

As an added bonus you could always wow your friends with your nabe's serious yuletide pride. This annual spectacle on the corner of Westervelt and Pelham Parkway is not to be missed, but often overlooked.
