President Obama and Congressman Serrano Supports Nomination of Julissa Reynoso

On Tuesday, Congressman Serrano attended the confirmation hearing for Julissa Reynoso, who was nominated by President Obama to serve as the US Ambassador to Uruguay. Reynoso grew up in the Bronx after her parents moved there from the Dominican Republic in 1982. "She will represent our country well and we are all so proud of her," said Serrano after the hearing. "Julissa is one of the shining lights of the New York Dominican Community and her success shows how people from our community can go anywhere and do anything."

Reynoso, along with several other nominees for posts in Latin America, is now waiting to be approved by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and then confirmed by the full Senate.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) released the following statement on Osama Bin Laden’s death. Rep. Engel is a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“The world is a better place today now that Osama Bin Laden is no longer part of it. I applaud President Obama and our men and women in uniform, and our entire intelligence community, for finally bringing this monster to justice. However, I am anxious to learn how the world’s Most Wanted Man was living in a mansion in an affluent neighborhood in Pakistan.

“As a New Yorker, I witnessed first hand the smoldering remains of the World Trade Center containing thousands of lost souls. Many people living in my district did not return to their families that night. Now, one year after the attempted bombing in Times Square, and almost 10 years since the attacks of 9-11, the person responsible for the worst attack on American soil has answered for his crimes.

“Tonight America may rejoice, but we cannot be complacent. Others are looking to take Bin Laden’s place. We must remain vigilant as we maintain our security and defend our homeland. On this night as we mark the mission to get Bin Laden accomplished, we must also remember the thousands who were lost on 9-11, their families, and those who have fought in the last decade to finally bring this day to fruition.”
