THE BRONX MUSEUM OF THE ARTS LAUNCHES FREE ADMISSION IN CELEBRATION OF 40TH ANNIVERSARY

BRONX, NY, March 27, 2012 – The Bronx Museum of the Arts has announced that general admission to the museum and its exhibitions will be free for all visitors beginning on March 29. Part of the institution’s 40th anniversary celebration, the museum is launching the free admission initiative to ensure it is accessible to members of the Bronx community and all visitors from across the city and the nation.

“At a time when other New York City museums are raising their admission fees, we have chosen to focus on increasing access to the museum as a resource for our community thanks to the support of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York Community Trust,” said Holly Block, executive director of The Bronx Museum of the Arts. “In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we are giving back to the Bronx community by not only offering free admission, but also “adopting” 40 neighborhood schools—enabling hundreds of children to experience the benefits of arts education.”

“For over 40 years, the Bronx Museum of Art has presented innovative exhibitions ranging from fine art to urban design, and its hands-on art education programs ensure that there is something for everyone to experience and enjoy,” said Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin. “Now, thanks to a public-private partnership with the New York Community Trust, the Museum’s new free admission policy will expand its commitment to welcoming New Yorkers from across the boroughs and beyond.”

The Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts was established in 1980 with the goals of providing networking opportunities for emerging artists residing in the New York metropolitan area and of introducing their work to a greater audience.

AIM is structured as a “collaborative residency” in which participants work directly with established artists, collectors, art critics, curators, dealers, lawyers, and other art world professionals. The 13-week seminar is offered annually to 36 participants, culminating with a biennial exhibition of the participants’ work in June 2013. AIM sessions provide information, instruction, and professional guidance by addressing areas of practical concern to artists, among them curatorial practice, copyright law, exhibition and public art opportunities, gallery representation, grant writing, and marketing. Sessions take place on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm at The Bronx Museum of the Arts and off-site locations.

Among past participants in the AIM program are Glenn Ligon—who was one of the early AIM artists and whose work was first exhibited at the Bronx Museum—and Polly Apfelbaum, Rina Banerjee, Amy Cutler, Anton Vidokle, and Pheobe Washburn.

Catch the trolley on the first Wednesday evening of each month (except January & September) at Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, on the campus of Hostos Community College at 450 Grand Concourse. The Bronx Write Bus
A Free Summer Program for Bronx Youth
July 12 - August 11, 2011

The Bronx Write Bus (BWB) is a free summer program for Bronx Youth ages 12-18. It is presented by the Bronx Council on the Arts’ Bronx Writers Center and meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from July 12 through August 11, 2011. The bus rides through New York City this summer, exploring arts and culture and giving voice to a new generation of writers.

On Tuesdays, the bus picks up thirty Bronx students, ages 12-18, from the Bronx Museum of the Arts (1040 Grand Concourse at 165th Street), giving them the opportunity to meet a writer or performer who introduces them to humor, memoir, travel writing, playwriting and poetry on the ride to the event. The BWB takes the group to art and cultural events in one of the four other boroughs, including a comedy improv class, a museum tour, a play, a walking tour of architecture and a poetry performance. On the BWB ride back to the Bronx, the group works on a creative response that that is published on CrossBRONX.org and will be shared in an anthology.

The BWB is intended for Bronx youth interested in writing and performance arts. All skill levels are welcome. Students who commit to the Bronx Write Bus must attend that week’s Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday sessions. They must reserve each week separately, but are welcome to attend one or all of the weekly sessions.

Students must pre-register for each week’s events at www.bronxarts.org/bronxwritebus.asp.

On Tuesdays, from 11:00am to 4:00pm, the BWB takes students to and from cultural sites in NYC.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 11:00am to 2:00pm, students take part in instructive, collaborative writing activities at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, 1040 Grand Concourse at 165th Street.

The Bronx Write Bus is sure to be a productive way for a young person to spend the summer. Participants acquire public speaking and performance skills; improve their communication skills; and build their confidence and self-esteem. The program fosters an increase in motivation and creativity. Finally, participants suffer less from the summer learning gap that often causes sub-par levels of achievement in the fall. Storytellers: Hetty Fox, Judith Heineman, Stuart Nager, Peggy Robles-Alvarado, Ashleigh Ham, Bianca Ortiz, and Monique Simmons

We have a very eclectic mix of storytellers this time around who are educators, poets, high school students, and even high school teachers! Their personal narratives will be inspired by the selected works of art from the exhibition, "The Kid in Me", a NYC teen exhibition curated by the Bronx Museum's Teen Council. After the professionals, audience members will be invited to participate in our open mic session and tell their personal tales.

You'll have a chance to create a work of art with our friends from Paper Tiger TV!

The goals of Bronx Stories are four-fold: to challenge stereotypes about the Bronx and promote positive images of the borough; provide a platform for voices from the community and space for the community to come together; encourage deeper engagement with art; and to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the museum.

For those that are not aware of the the First Wednesday Bronx Culture Tour, please see the post below taken from their web site. Each first Wednesday of each month, the Bronx trolley takes individuals to specific points of interest mostly in the Mott Haven / Grand Concourse Section of the Bronx. The event is organized by the Bronx Council of the Arts. This Wednesdays tours seems to be especially vibrant. The mixture of events and time of year should make the experience extra special.

First Wednesdays Bronx Culture Trolley
Hop on the trolley and enjoy attractions at some of the hottest cultural spots along the lower Grand Concourse

Catch the trolley on the first Wednesday evening of each month (except January & September) at Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, on the campus of Hostos Community College at 450 Grand Concourse. The trolley departs at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30pm for other venues in the South Bronx Cultural Corridor. The trolley ride and admission to participating venues along its route are free. The Bronx Culture Trolley vehicle is wheelchair accessible.

Directions: Hostos Community College is located at 450 Grand Concourse near 149th Street in the Bronx. Take the 2, 4 & 5 trains or Bx1, Bx19 buses to Grand Concourse and 149 Street. More detailed directions.

Observed, Imagined and Recreated features works by 2009 Urban Artist Initiative Grant (UAI NYC) winners in visual arts and media. Curated by Juanita Lanzo, the show focuses on the politics of representation, gender, national identity, migration, post-colonial history and politics and their impact on the construction of the self. EYE AM A MAN: MAN-HOOD in the GAY-HOOD by the ART-HOOD, curated by Ivan Velez Jr., includes painting, photography, drawing, sculpture and video. It explores gender constructions, religion, machismo, popular and street culture and how they shape our notions of queerness, and homosexuality. On view in the Project Room. A dialogue in song across the oceans. The Mermaid’s Feet is a collaborative effort between East Harlem-based vocalists Catarina dos Santos and Raquek Z. My Words, My Way / Poetry Slam

BCA's Bronx WritersCorps’ fifteenth annual preliminary Youth Poetry Slam in which young poets perform original poetry raising their voices to reveal the truth of their lives and their dreams for the future. Winners of this evening’s slam will compete in the May 11th poetry slam finals at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. This evening’s slam is hosted by writer/performer Earl Majette and features Abiodun “DUNE” Oyewole of “The Last Poets” and a special performance by SideTrack Boyz.

SideTrack Boyz is a unique R&B/POP vocal performance group made up of three individually talented young men, Lonique, Wyane and Vaugn, who sing, dance and put on
an invigorating performance.

They write and produce music, and are currently recording their own original music. They perform regularly, citywide, and are well received by their audiences. Learn more about them at:

Stargazers: Elizabeth Catlett
in Conversation with 21 Contemporary Artists
A new exhibition of more than 40 sculptures and prints by Ms. Catlett will explore her career from the 1960s to the present as a pioneering African- American female artist and her relationship to later generations of contemporary artists. Stargazers will also include works by 21 international contemporary artists whose ideas and practices will be examined in conversation with Catlett’s life and work. (on view thru May 29).

Alexandre Arrechea: Orange Tree
A 20-foot steel sculpture created by Cuban-born artist Alexandre Arrechea, with multi-limbed basketball hoop "branches" surrounded by scattered basketballs to mimic fallen fruit. Orange Tree shifts familiar structures to engage viewers' perceptions of form and function, while raising questions about the role of street sports in urban culture (on view in the Bronx Museum Terrace thru June 6).

NEARLY 1,000 ARTISTS VIE TO SERVE AS CULTURAL AMBASSADORS FOR U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE’S smARTpowerSM INITIATIVE
Bronx Museum of the Arts Receives Overwhelming Response to New Visual Arts Effort

Nearly 1,000 visual artists from nearly all 50 states and United States’ territories are vying to be cultural ambassadors through the smARTpowerSM initiative, The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the U.S. Department of State announced today. Through smARTpower, an initiative created by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, 15 American visual artists are slated to travel to 15 countries, including China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Venezuela. The artists, who will be selected and announced in May, will work with local communities to collaborate on works of art that may address local or global social issues, such as women’s empowerment, education, health, the environment, and civic engagement.

“We are excited by the tremendous response to the smARTpower initiative,” said Bronx Museum of the Arts Director Holly Block. “We had high expectations for the number of proposals we would receive, but the response far exceeded those expectations. This is an exceptional opportunity for U.S. artists to serve as cultural diplomats, strengthening ties with commmunities around the world and using the visual arts to reach across the barriers of language and cultural differences.”

The 15 American artists will be selected at the end of May by a distinguished panel of artists and leaders in the arts community, in consultation with the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Department of State. Panelists are:

Sandra D. Jackson-DuMont – Deputy Director of Education and Public Programs and Adjunct Curator at the Seattle Art Museum
Carin Kuoni – Vera List Center Director, Curator and Critic

Negro League Exhibit at the Bronx Museum of the Arts Opens March 31st

NEGRO LEAGUE EXHIBIT IN THE BRONX

Negro League baseball will return to The Bronx at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, on Thursday, March 31st. The Negro League Baseball Museum will display its “Times, Teams, & Talent” exhibit, in the museum’s South Wing Lower Gallery. The exhibit is sponsored by the 161st Street Business Improvement District. “Times, Teams, & Talent” provides an introduction to the Negro League and baseball greats like -- Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. “Times, Teams, & Talent” includes photographs showcasing the history of African-American baseball and the desegregation of Major League Baseball.” In addition to the traveling exhibit, the Museum will screen two Negro League videos: “They Were All Stars” and “Only the Ball Was White.”

“Times, Teams, & Talent” will be open from Thursday, March 31 to Wednesday, April 6th, 2011. It will be open for viewing daily from 11am to 6pm, with the exception of Friday, April 1st when it will be open from 11am to 8pm. The Negro League Baseball Museum is the world’s foremost repository for information and artifacts pertaining to the Negro Leagues. It is based in Kansas City in the 18th and Vine Historic District and is paired with the National Jazz Museum. The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a contemporary art museum that connects diverse audiences to the urban experience through its permanent collection, special exhibitions, and education programs. Reflecting the borough's dynamic communities, the Museum is the crossroad where artists, local residents, national and international visitors meet. The 161st Street BID sponsored The Hispanic Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame exhibit in Lou Gehrig Plaza in 2009. The BID is one of 64 across New York City administered by Small Business Services whose Commissioner is Robert Walsh.

About Valerie Capers:

Dr. Valerie Capers was born in the Bronx and received her early schooling at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind. She has also performed with a roster of outstanding artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Brown, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Slide Hampton, Max Roach, James Moody and Paquito D'Rivera, among others. Valerie Capers was the first recipient of Essence magazine's "Women of Essence Award for Music," where she was in the elite company of fellow honorees Oprah Winfrey and Marla Gibbs.
