Parkchester - Still a Hidden Secret?

Parkchester, a city-within-a-city located in the Northeast section of the Bronx, contains that exceedingly rare and exclusive sought after illusion in NYC these days – affordable housing stock! Built as attainable and affordable housing in the late thirties by Met Life (who also contributed Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan), Parkchester has always been a haven for working and middle class New Yorkers. But now the secret is out and many Manhattanites, seeking relief from the ever escalating NYC real estate prices and the deregulation of formerly affordable rent-stabilized apartments, are on the move northbound to Parkchester and other communities of the Bronx that offer safety, spacious apartments, green space, easy commuting into Manhattan, and most important – prices that the average person and/or family can afford. (Not many places exist in any of the boroughs where a house hunter can find condos starting at $115,000!)

Manhattan is easily accessed by the #6 subway and by an Express Bus. All amenities are within walking distance of each apartment (Macy’s, Starbucks, Dress Barn, NY & Co, The Children’s Place, Radio Shack, Hollywood Video, Walgreens, etc. as well as a plethora of banks, supermarkets, fast food establishments and its own post office, day care and movie theatre!) The Bronx Botanical Garden, Bronx Zoo, Belmont Avenue/ Little Italy, Fordham University, Orchard Beach and City Island are all short bus rides away.

Here is another website with a great video. The only thing that kills me is, towards the end, the shot of what is supposed to be the luxury Express Bus into Manhattan. That bus in the video looks like it has been on the darn road since the seventies!!! Somebody producing the video really dropped the ball on that one. The Express Buses are truly luxury-style buses. I ride them every day and they're great!
