Fresh and Affordable Produce Back in the Bronx this Summer

Farm Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Shares Available through a Community Supported
Agriculture Program for Families of All Incomes Levels – Food Stamps Accepted

The second season of the Bronx Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) will begin Tuesday June 19, 2012, and continue every Tuesday through November 13, 2012. “Our CSA’s mission is to ‘make fresh, healthy produce, direct from the farmer available and accessible to any Bronx resident, regardless of economic status’”, said Joel Berg, executive director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. In addition to fresh, pesticide-free, affordable vegetables, this year the Bronx CSA will be offering an optional fruit share to its members.

Each member receives a “share” of vegetables: a full share will feed 3-4 people and a half- share will feed 1-2 people depending on your typical diet. We only have a limited amount of shares available for everyone, so don’t wait to purchase your share. To ensure that our shares are affordable for everyone, we offer flexible payment options for low-income households, and SNAP (formerly known as “Food Stamps”) benefits are also accepted to purchase vegetable and fruit shares.

In addition to providing more fresh produce for consumers, CSAs also support local farmers. The Bronx CSA will once again partner with the Fresh Radish Farm a small 9-acre family farm located in Goshen, New York, for its vegetable share. The newly added fruit share will be provided by Hepworth Farms, a 7th generation family owned farm located in Milton, New York on the banks of the Hudson River. Each week, Hepworth Farms will provide a selection of locally grown fruits that is cultivated using practices as close to organic as possible in this region.

The farmers will bring the harvest every Tuesday for 22 consecutive weeks from June 19 through November 13 to the Seventh Day Adventist Temple at 1275 Grand Concourse. Members will be able to pick up their shares from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The deadline to purchase shares is Wednesday, May 23rd. There will be opportunities to sign up in person every Tuesday from April 20th through Tuesday May 22nd at 5 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Temple at 1275 Grand Concourse. Please contact us at bronxcsanyc@gmail.com or at (212) 825-0028 for a membership agreement. You can also visit our website at www.BronxCSA.wordpress.com to download the agreement. In addition to fresh, pesticide-free food, there are also opportunities for cooking and nutrition workshops, farm visits, and food policy and advocacy information.

The Nomadic Organization and No Longer Empty Present "This Side of Paradise" at the Andrew Freedman Home

Here is exciting news about the Freedman Home on the Grand Concourse. I am sure many of you have passed by the mansion on the Grand Concourse and wondered what the history and present use of the property is. The note from Liz @ NLE below and the links also posted, show the brewing of a great community space. Once I receive the proper press release about the event on the 4th I will post it for everyone to review. I have never been inside the property, but from the history and photos on the links, I look forward to opportunity.

Dear Gregory,

I want to alert you about an unusual arts project taking place in the
Bronx. The nomadic organization, No Longer Empty (NLE) is presenting
"This Side of Paradise" that will draw attention to an uncommon/not widely
known story of New York City.

On April 4, 2012, on the Grand Concourse, the gates of the Andrew
Freedman Home will open and present This Side of Paradise encompassing
30 different site-response artworks, on and off site participatory projects
and film screenings. The theme draws on the building's quixotic history
together with the present day realities of the Bronx.

A little history: In 1922, Andrew Freedman was a self-made millionaire who
bequeathed his estate to be a retirement home for the elderly who lost
their fortunes . Interesting to note is Freedman was a shrewd businessman;
a key player in constructing the Inter-Borough Transit Rail, the Broadway
Theaters and the New York Giants League. The Home's endowment ran out in
the 1980s.

Thanks to the current property owners, Mid-Bronx Senior Citizens Council
, NLE will breathe new air into this space and neighborhood with a roster
of creative events (activity committees, empanada workshops, beatboxing
music, speakeasy evenings, discussions and live music and dance
performances). NLE is also partnering with a cadre of cross-Bronx cultural
institutions, such as the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Wave Hill, and the
POINT to market borough's dynamic cultural assets to a greater audience
that may have outdated notions of the Bronx.

Attached is the project full description. The official press release has not been released.

Ramadan Breakfast Sponsored by Ruben Diaz Jr. Thursday August 25th at the Bronx County Courthouse

Ramadan Breakfast Sponsored by Ruben Diaz Jr., set for Thursday August 25th at the Bronx County Courthouse

Many are probably not aware that the Muslim community in the Bronx has grown substantially in the last few years. Just from my observations, I believe most are West Africans that have migrated predominately to the neighborhoods in the South West Bronx; Highbridge, Lower Grand Concourse. Ironically, they have landed in Bronx communities I believe will have the greatest "monetary appreciation" in the next decade. In addition to becoming small business owners, many are active participants in their community civic organizations.

As a testament to their presence, community activism and reverence, the Bronx Borough President will sponsor “Breakfast with Your Neighbor this Ramadan” on Thursday, August 25th, 2011. For anyone interested in attending here are the details;

What: Breakfast with Your Neighbor this Ramadan
Where: The Bronx County Courthouse
851 Grand Concourse, Veteran’s Memorial Hall
When: Thursday August 25th, 2011
5:30 Program – followed by Prayer and Dinner

BoogieDowner Open House: Large One and Two Bedroom Art-deco Co-ops Available at 55 E 190th Street

OPEN HOUSE

Saturday June 4th
12 noon to 2pm

55 E. 190th Street
Bronx, NY 10453
Unit #'s 25, 28 and 32
(Corner of E. 190th St and Morris Avenue. Fordham/Grand Concourse Section of the Bronx.)

I am conducting an OPEN HOUSE tomorrow in a pre-war elevator building on the Grand Concourse that I love selling co-ops in. Owner occupancy is high and the building is in excellent condition with strong financials. I have three co-op units available which I posted information and photos for below. All are well priced with very reasonable maintenances in an environment were qualified buyers are securing mortgages with interest rates in the low to mid 4% range.

Besides having a great marble lobby entrance, with mural, period accents include high ceilings, sunken living rooms and hardwood floors make the building and each apartment a joy to walk into and call home. All three of the units offered are in great condition with recent remodeling completed in each, including new hardwood kitchen cabinets, stainless steel appliances and renovated bathrooms. Both two bedroom two bath units are vacant sponsor units with no board approval requirement. In addition, the proximity to the B, D and 4 subway lines provide quick access to Manhattan if/when needed. A Parking garage is located one block east of the building and the recently renovated St. James Park is just around the corner as well as major shopping along both Fordham and Jerome Avenue. This property truly is a gem and has a lot to offer.

All three units are ripe to be sold with very reasonable asking prices. Feel free to contact me anytime at (845) 304-5745 if you have any additional questions or concerns. Please do note however that the building is not pet friendly. I look forward to seeing everyone interested at the open house.

Sincerely,
