Mark your calendars: April 16th, 2011 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Here comes the first annual Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Festival, celebrating the multicultural heritage of the surrounding community with street vendors, ethnic cuisine, games, music and performances, along with community service and learning activities. The event will take place at the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center, 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, in the Bronx, NY.
The Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Festival will feature a street fair on Kingsbridge Terrace in front of our main building, with vendors, food, and games, as well as multicultural displays and events on our grounds. These activities will coincide with our portion of the Horace Mann School’s Service-Learning Day 2011–-one of New York City’s extensive school-based community service efforts. Visitors to the Fair will be welcome to take part as volunteers, as well.
The event, open to the public, will feature live entertainment in an outdoor amphitheater; children’s activities will be fun and educational, including puppeteering; juggling, dance, magic, storytelling in English and Spanish, cooking, and a Bronx oral history corner. Performances will take place in our amphitheater all afternoon, as well as inside our main building. Performers will include a rock band, steel drums, and Indian and Latin dancers; and karate and capoeira groups will demonstrate their skill.
This year the community service portion of the event will again focus on replanting our vegetable garden, mural-painting, and fun, educational workshops for young children presented by Horace Mann students. Horace Mann’s Service-learning Day includes a series of Northwest Bronx events produced in association with the Marble Hill Community Center, Van Cortlandt Park, Community Board 8, and other local partners. Since originating in 2008, the annual Service-Learning Day has developed into one of the most far-reaching community-service projects put together by any New York City school. The Festival will take place at 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, corner of Perot, just off the Deegan at 230th Street; near the Nos. 1, 3, and 10 buses, and the Nos.1 and 4 trains.
