Dear New Yorker,

We're thrilled to announce the release of the NYC ARTS Cultural Guides for Seniors.

These guides, which were developed in cooperation with the Alliance for the Arts as part of the City's Age-Friendly NYC Initiative, contain information about more than 300 arts and cultural institutions citywide, organized by borough.

They also list over 85 free or low-cost programs designed specifically for seniors and include special discounts on admission and memberships, as well as important information about accessibility for those with sight, hearing or mobility concerns. New York's cultural institutions are among the best in the world, and we hope that with these guides older New Yorkers will be better able to access and take advantage of all of the amazing programs and opportunities that these institutions have to offer.

We'd like to thank the Alliance for the Arts and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate Levin for all of the time and hard work that they put into the creation of these wonderful guides.

Special thanks as well to all of the advocates and advocacy groups who've been working with us to help make New York a better place to grow old and retire in.

To download one or more of these free guides, click here or visit the Alliance for the Arts' website at www.allianceforarts.org.

Thanks so much and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,
Christine C. QuinnSpeaker

NY City Clerk Expands Services to Accommodate Increase in Marriages Expected

Here is another informational letter sent for distribution pertaining to helping couples navigate their marriages requirements with the City Clerks office. Resources have been expanded due to the expected increased in marriages, due to the passing of same sex marriage legislation earlier this month.

The letter was sent by Councilwoman Christine Quinn who according to today's New York Daily News article has the largest war chest of any Mayoral candidate. Here are the statistics listed in today’s paper;

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn: $4 Million
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer: $2.5 Million
Public Advocate Bill de Blasio: $1 Million

Any feedback on who the winner will be come the next election? Who else would you consider a candidate? How important will support for same sex marriage legislation be in the next Mayor election?

Dear New Yorker,

New York State's Marriage Equality Law was signed into law by Governor Cuomo on June 24, 2011, allowing same-sex couples to marry legally in New York for the first time.

Many of us have waited a lifetime for this to happen and we want to make sure everyone who wants to get married here has the information they need to get a marriage license and have a successful wedding.

The New York City Clerk will begin issuing marriage licenses and performing civil marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples starting on Sunday, July 24, 2011, and has put together a list of questions and answers for couples to help guide them through the application process. To access, please click here. Additional information about the application process is also available on the City Clerk's website at http://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov.

Finally, for anyone interested in volunteering in the City Clerk's office and helping out in this extraordinary effort, please contact Carlos Menchaca in my office at (212) 788-5646 or cmenchaca@council.nyc.gov.

We look forward to welcoming all couples and their families who wanted to get married in New York City!

Sincerely,
Christine C. Quinn

CITY PARKS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES SPRING 2011 SEASON OF CITYPARKS SENIORS FITNESS IN THE BRONX Free Yoga, Tennis & Fitness Walking Instruction

CityParks Foundation has organized various citywide health and fitness events for our senior citizens. I am especially pleased they will use Crotona Park as one of their event locations. Crotona Park is a beautiful garden oasis in the Center of the Bronx. In my opinion it is one of the boroughs best kept secrets. I posted a few photos at the end of this post taken from a walk I took through the park last fall. The events are made possible with the support of Zwicker Electric. I also posted their web site address since without their sponsorship, these events for our seniors might not have been possible.
