Listing of the Day: Carrion Chops Again

620 City Island Avenue, 6 Bedrooms - $4,000/month $3,800/month

I guess this is a very soft market for renting out converted French B&Bs on City Island. It looks like former Beep, Adolfo Carrion, is still trying to rent out his old digs on City Island. BoogieDowner had profiled this unit back in July when it was listed at $4,200/month (a chop from an original $4,600). Then the old BD stalked the listing and found a second rental chop in September down to $4,000.

Well, now this puppy has been reduced down to $4,000...$3,800

Addie's off in Washington (although no one is really quite sure what he's doing), and he is still trying to rent his opulent City Island pad.

The craigslist ad BoogieDowner stumbled upon doesn't explicitly mention that it is Carrion's house, but there's only one "Former French B&B" on City Island and only one ex-Beep who used to reside in the aforementioned former French B&B.

From BoogieDowner's past jaunts on City Island Avenue, we can certainly affirm the house's party potential.

This is a little out of most BoogieDowner readers' budgets, but I heard it has a pretty sick catwalk...*wink*wink*

Listing of the Day: City Island Rental (with a Pool!)

293 William Avenue, 3 Bedrooms, 1.5 Bathrooms - $2200/month

This rental house is pretty sick. Stunning interior, yard. pool, fireplaces. For less than $800 a bedroom it's hard to beat. If you don;t have the cash for a down payment or the credit score to land that increasingly more elusive mortgage, this is a good option for a family. City Island is safe and can be down right quaint at times, nay even bucolic or idyllic.

There are tons of dining establishments, many of which are seafood based, but other Italian and pub grub options as well. Even though you're on an island with one way in and one way out by car, the BxM7 would take you back to civilization in a hurry as City Island's Express bus to Manhattan. The Bx29 would take you to the Pelham Bay Park 6 train stop for a more local commute. Obviously the Bx29 would also be your route to the Bronx at large.

If you want to check out City Island before signing on to rent this house, jump on the tourist trolley that runs on the first Friday of every month. And hey, even if you're not in the market for an isolated water front cottage, you should still check out the trolley to broaden your horizons. Click HERE for more details

Listing of the Day: City Island Rental

34 Carroll Street, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom - $1850/month

The rapid approach of summer has BoogieDowner dreaming of a little beach cottage somewhere. It's nice to know that we have such a thing here in the Bronx. Two bedrooms and a beach (or at least some decent water views) for $1850 - only in the Bronx, kiddies.

Listing of the Day: City Island Rental

City Island, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms - $2500/month

This is a family style rental. The listing describes the house as a "sea captain's house," although I am not sure how many of you are the seafaring type. To be honest this is a pretty good option if you have a growing family and maybe aren't ready to buy yet. City Island is pretty quiet and quaint.

Listing of the Day: Island For Sale

Rat Island, 2.5 Acres - $300,000

Not sure who would finance the rather impractical purchase of a rocky island off of City Island that is sometimes underwater at high tide, but there's one for sale if you're interested. I would assume that there is no electricity or plumbing, so this wouldn't be ideal for a residence, but you can't beat the views. I guess you'd also have to have marine transportation to get to a fro, but if you're buying an island you probably have a boat.

The unfortunately named Rat Island is on the market for $300,000. "'It's a nice, unique spot,' Red Brennen [the current owner] said. 'I cleaned it up in anticipation of selling it. So I'm just waiting on offers. Only serious ones, though. No tire-kickers.'" [NY Daily News]

To make a "serious offer," call (718) 928-6598.

Listing of the Day: City Island Serenity

20 Earley Street, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms - $1,595,000

Well the freakishly warm weather in the middle of this week got the ole BoogieDowner a little excited about the coming spring and summer. What better Bronx nabe to be in during the summer than City Island? Yes, this is crazy expensive, but if you do have that type of money, you'd be able to save on taxes because City Island is still in the , er, well, City... Makes sense, right? The pics tell it all. BoogieDowner can only dream.FULL LISTING

Listing of the Day: City Island Sickness

33 Tier Street, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms - $825,000

Yes the price is crazy high, but look at the pics. This unit is in a co-operative community, which means a short leash on neighbors, which is good unless the leash is on your neck.

Waterfront is waterfront, and this puppy is waterfront. This is the sickness. Who wouldn't want to entertain here? BoogieDowner can dream.

City Island Town Hall Alert

If you're upset by the City's planned nighttime closure of Ladder 53 on City Island, you're invited to join Council Member James Vacca, Community Board 10, City Island Civic Association, City Island Chamber of Commerce, and other like-minded City Island residents at a Town Hall meeting tomorrow night, 12/15, at 7:30pm at Grace Church on City Island Avenue.

With the nearest ladder company being in Co-op City, the planned nighttime closure of Ladder 53 could have catastrophic effects on City Island.

I certainly cannot think of a worse place to cut back FDNY services... this place has one way in, and one way out. Not one of the City's brightest ideas.

Listing of the Day: City Island Rental

Minnieford Avenue at Beach Street, 1 bedroom $1900/month

Crazy expensive yes, but indicative of the diversity of rental units available in our beloved borough. A private beach and the solitude of City Island are what would draw a renter out here.

If you want to check out City Island before signing that lease for just under $2k/month, jump on the tourist trolley that runs on the first Friday of every month. And hey, even if you're not in the market for an isolated water front cottage, you should still check out the trolley to broaden your horizons. Click HERE for more details.

Brunch in the BoogieDown

New York Post's Page Six Magazine did a piece about the best places to brunch in every NYC neighborhood...

They covered five hot spots in the BoogieDown, including Bruckner Bar & Grill ("Best Budget Brunch") in the South Bronx and Le Refuge Inn ("Best Date Brunch") (pictured right) on City Island.

City Island Up-Close

Click here to read a piece by David Vega-Barachowitz about City Island in today's Columbia Spectator, Columbia University's daily newspaper.

It's nothing you haven't read before, but BoogieDowner likes to hype any little morsel of good press about our bad-ass borough. Aren't we annoying?

NYC Got You Tired, Run Down, Listless?

Well then, I have the perfect tonic! I suggest you boogie on down to the best getaway (bar none) that The Bronx has to offer: City Island! Located just a short bus ride or two away from most of our borough's nabes, this quaint little island with a small town, all-American vibe will leave you shouting "This is in THE BRONX??? Shut Up!!!"

The home of several Zagat-rated restaurants with fabulous seafood, beautiful marinas, a lost-in-time Mayberry-esque Main Street, and homes so varied in style that it could keep an architecture buff happy for years, this place is a must for anyone wanting to just get away from it all. For any New Yorker, the silence, serenity and slow pace of the island is nearly impossible to find anywhere else within a 50 mile range... yet we Bronxites have this jewel right in our own backyard!

A recent Colorado transplant here to complete her doctorate, Abra Havens (who can't believe all that she is finding in The Bronx so far) tagged along as I took another trip to the island. We decided on The Sea Shore Restaurant and Marina for lunch (lobster for me, Shrimp Scampi for her) where we sat on the patio deck facing one of the several marinas and just basked in the cool breeze, soaked in the sounds of seagulls and watched happily as dreamy sailboats floated by. (The Sea Shore also has a separate garden patio, a fabulous lodge-style bar with leather sofas facing a fireplace, AND a sushi bar!)

Afterwards, we walked to the end of the island where we stopped in for an iced cappuccino at The Lobster Box and sat at the bar watching Obama announce Joe Biden as his VP pick on the big screen TV. Full, caffeinated, and giddy as we Democrats could be, we then walked the length of the island down side streets enjoying all the fabulous homes - Cape Cods, Salt Boxes, Fishermens' Cottages, Colonials, Ranches, French Tudors, new condos, etc.....all sitting so proudly and unexpectedly next to one another that I gave a private little curse to planned communities, zoning laws, and homeowners associations that have given us uninspiring, homogenized and thoroughly mind-numbing and boring housing across America.

So come on, Don't Worry - head on over to City Island and... Be Happy!

How to Get There: There are many ways to get to the island - a great way is by bike, car or motorcycle, but if that is not an option for you take a bus or subway to Pelham Bay Park and hop on the BX29 (make sure it's the one to City Island, as there are two going in different directions). You could also take the Orchard Beach bound BX-12 bus which runs along Fordham Rd. and Pelham Parkway, so you could get to the Bx-12 by the 4, B, D, 5, 2, or Metro North at Fordham. The Bx-12 ends at Orchard Beach, but you would get off one stop early and walk across the bridge to City Island.
