SummerStage Launches in the Bronx Featuring Special Commissioned Works for Music, Dance and Theater

This years City Parks Foundation SummerStage program includes over 100 performances throughout NYC. I encourage everyone to log onto the SummerStage festival web site to learn more about the great performances available free to the public.

As the SummerStage events in the Bronx come up, I will remind everyone with a post more specific to the event. Information on this Tuesdays and Wednesdays musical performances at Soundview Park can be found below. It’s great that the arts are provided to the public free of charge through the City Parks Foundation and SummerStage. Kudos to everyone that made the events possible.

SummerStage Launches in the Bronx Featuring Special Commissioned Works for
Music, Dance and Theater

Summerstage is in the Bronx June 28 – July 19

New York, NY– City Parks Foundation SummerStage is New York’s largest free performing arts festival. The 2011 SummerStage season runs from June 7th to September 2nd and offers over 100 performances in 18 parks across the 5 boroughs.. The festival will be in the Bronx from June 28 to July 19th and will provide Bronx residents with a diverse range of free concerts, dance and theater performances in their community parks. SummerStage fills a vital niche in New York City’s summer arts festival landscape and has entertained more than six million people from New York City and around the world since its establishment 26 years ago.

Musical highlights from this season in the Bronx include a global cast of the best Latin musical artists including CHRIS ALFINEZ, TONY VEGA, RAY SEPULVEDA, the Afro-Caribbean group XCSTACY and hip-hop legends BLACK SHEEP, SLICK RICK and DJ BRUCIE B among other top notch artists.

Dance enthusiasts will be visually enthralled with flamenco, tap and African performances. The all-female flamenco company, PASIÓN Y ARTE celebrates their 10th anniversary. They will perform excerpts from four of their major works choreographed by Elba Hevia y Vaca and will include an introductory flamenco dance class. ON TAP will share the intrinsic artistry of tap dancing with audiences. OPUS DANCE THEATER and DANCE IQUAIL! will exemplify the universal language of dance through swift movements with works that confront issues like racism, substance abuse, poverty and promote the importance of family unity.

“Every year SummerStage consistently hosts a selection of high quality arts programming in various parks throughout the Bronx,” said James Burke, City Parks Foundation’s Director of Arts & Cultural Programming. “New Yorkers and visitors alike can now visit the Bronx to discover talent at SummerStage that is as artistically and culturally diverse as the neighborhoods themselves.”

This season, City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage has also commissioned a number of artists to create unique programs that will premiere at SummerStage. These programs span the worlds of music, dance and theater and feature some of the brightest rising stars as well as several critically acclaimed artists. These distinctive programs further SummerStage’s dedication to not only presenting the best artists from around the world but to also play an active role in promoting artistic creativity.

“Sangre” is a special theater commission that explores the effects of violence within the community. A gritty, raw, intense perspective into modern urban culture and how men’s choices affect loved ones and the community at large, this powerful theater piece is playwright’s Mando Alvarado spirited interpretation of famed Spanish playwright, Frederico Garcia Lorca’s seminal work, “Blood Wedding.”

DJ Kid Capri, Black Sheep, and Peter Gunz

Black Sheep is a hip-hop duo from Queens, NY comprised of Andres "Dres" Titus and William "Mista Lawnge" McLean. The group was a part of Native Tounges, a collective of rising hip-hop stars headed by Afrika Bambata and also including A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, among many others. They debuted in 1991 with the hit song “Flavor of the Month” and later released the full album “A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing,” which sold close to 900,000 copies, gaining them acclaim in the hip-hop community. The popular song from the album, “The Choice is Yours” spent 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart.

Peter Gunz was a member of the 90s hip-hop duo, “Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz.” The duo released their only album in 1998 entitled, “Make It Reign.” The album peaked at #38 on the Billboard 200 and #8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and featured collaborations with Big Pun, Fat Joe and Cam'ron among others.

Bronx native David Anthony Love, also known by his stage name as DJ Kid Capri started dropping beats at the ripe age of 8. As a teen he already had a solid gig at famed nightclub studio 54 where he developed a grassroots following from selling mix tapes. Since then Kid Capri has grown to be one of the most recognizable djs in the world. He performed on the popular show Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jams for 7 seasons and has toured with artists such as Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, L.L. Cool J, and many more. This ambitious turntable veteran is sure to have audiences dancing anywhere he performs.

Larry Harlow and The Latin Legends Band

With over 40 years in the music industry, Larry Harlow has made significant contributions to Afro-Cuban music, taking instruments and rhythms and infusing them with his personal musical style.

At the famed Latin music label, Fania Records, he became one of the leading Latin music producers in the world, producing over 300 CDs and garnering several Grammy nominations.

With his group, Larry Harlow and The Latin Legends Band, they have spread the infectious rhythm of Latin music to audiences around the world. The group has a famed, “thick sound” composed of high pitches from the horn section mingled with the fast, steady beats of a variety of percussions, the harmonic voice of a piano and the vocals of four or five musicians. Larry Harlow and The Latin Legends moves audiences with their music, especially “when the energy builds, the riffs, the singing, the solos, the percussion all lock in…moving at different times but for the same purpose,” according to The New York Times.
