July 2 Kicks Off Fragrant and Food-related Summer Fun for Families at
The New York Botanical Garden

WHAT: Summer treats families to fragrant and food-related fun at The New York Botanical Garden starting July 2, 2011. A Sweet and Stinky theme shapes hands-on activities in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, where kids of all ages use their noses to discover garlic, onions, and more.

In the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, Flowers to Fruits presents nature exploration activities to teach kids about pollinators that help flowers become fruits, and Farm to Table introduces youngsters to the source of favorite foods through play.

Visit http://www.nybg.org/ to purchase tickets.

Sweet and Stinky in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Follow the “sweet and stinky” smells in the Family Garden to discover aromatic alliums such as onions and garlic and herbs such as basil and oregano ripe for summer. Savor the scents and tickle your taste buds at cooking demonstrations. Green your thumb by potting up an herb to take care of at home. Treat your nose to the delicious aromas of herbs and veggies growing in the new Mario Batali’s Edible Garden display beds also in the Family Garden.

Flowers to Fruits in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Make a Nature Field Notebook and set out to discover the amazing diversity of flowers and pollinators that inhabit the Adventure Garden during the summer months. Create a pollinator puppet, pot up a plant, and visit the pond to spot frogs, turtles, and other wetland wildlife.

Farm to Table in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
Investigate the world around you using your imagination and creativity at this whimsical play-exhibit. Real plants under a “windmill” and a “barn” complete with hay make you feel like you’re on the farm! Pretend to harvest fruits and vegetables and use them to “cook” yummy recipes at the nearby “cafe.”
