Holiday Marathons: 2nd Annual Van Cortland Christmas Marathon moved to Yonkers Park due to NYC Parks Bureaucracy and Antics

I enjoyed receiving and posting news about the free running events organized by Holiday Marathons right here in the Boogiedown. Unfortunately, the organization has moved it’s free Christmas Marathon, which attracted hundreds of runners last year, to a park in Yonkers due to alleged indifference or possible interference by NYC park bureaucrats.

Information related to the event and why Holiday Marathons will take their Christmas run north of the Bronx, can be reviewed below. It’s a shame when we loose quality events like the runs organized by Holiday Marathons. In my opinion, city government let everyone down on this front. Contact numbers to city officials who could possible make a difference on future runs can be found on the links provided.

"Sadly the NYC Parks Dept. denied our permit request for Christmas in VC Park and has been imposing unfair rules and regulations upon us. For a list of the antics of the NYC Parks Dept. go to http://www.thechristmasmarathon.com/index.php/nyc-parks-cancels-xmas-2011/ "

October 11, 2011 (Bronx, NY) – On Saturday, September 24, 2011, the Jerome–Gun Hill Business Improvement District celebrated the 10th anniversary of their highly anticipated free annual festival on Jerome Avenue between East Gun Hill Road and Mosholu Parkway in the Norwood section of the Bronx. Over 30,000 festival-goers enjoyed impressive performances by the Grammy nominated New Swing Sextet band, Latin sensation, Anayka, hip hop recording artists Tone da Rapper and Rob SALESE, and many other performers. The festival was hosted by Ray Raimundi from News 12 The Bronx, longtime MC and Harlem Lanes’ DJ, Krazy Rob, Artie Rodriguez of the Diamante Cable Show, and Sara Kana from the Grindtimenow.com Internet show. This year’s festival also featured an "old school" rapper celebrity basketball game, Disney Road Crew live appearances, world tournaments of Chess and Dominos, numerous merchandise vendors, and lots of great food.

The Jerome–Gun Hill BID, one of the 64 NYC BID's managed by Commissioner Robert Walsh of the NYC Department of Small Business Services, created the Jerome–Gun Hill BID Festival in 2002 to promote the businesses within the Jerome-Gun Hill BID and invite over 200 BID merchants, food & product vendors and corporations to showcase and sell their goods and services to Bronxites and fellow New Yorkers, focusing on neighborhood unity and drawing thousands of participants of all ages and backgrounds. The festival was also founded as a way to give back to the community and allow the community to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Norwood neighborhood and its rich historic past.

This event was sponsored by the Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District (BID), Montefiore Medical Center, Healthfirst, The New York Daily News, Ridgewood Savings Bank, Radio Disney and many others. An Al Pizarro production, the event was also co-produced with Record Pool, Clearview Festival Productions and Marketing & Advertising Solutions (MAS).
