New York Cares, the city’s leading volunteer organization, offers great ways for Bronx residents to get involved in their community through rewarding, conveniently scheduled projects.

March Volunteer Project Highlights – The Bronx

Becoming a New York Cares volunteer is easy. Simply attend a one-time orientation at the Mott Haven Library in Fordham on the evening of Tuesday, March 20^th or any other Bronx location. You can then choose from approximately 1,200 projects citywide each month. To register for an orientation in your area, please visit www.newyorkcares.org or call 212-228-5000 .

Upcoming Bronx project highlights:

• Mock Interviews with Jobs-Plus at BronxWorks — Empower local job seekers transitioning to self-sufficiency by taking an hour and a half of your time to participate in mock interviews in Melrose on Monday afternoons. Spanish language skills desired but not required. Professional work experience and attire is strongly recommended.
• Fun with Data at Ariva — Ensure that communities of New York get the services they need by working with a team of volunteers to transfer data from Food Stamps surveys to an online database on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings in Highbridge.
• Sports Explorers with Immaculate Conception School — Motivate middle school students to meet their potential by playing basketball, soccer, and other sports in Norwood on Monday afternoons.
• Spruce Up Drew Gardens — Spend a Saturday morning outdoors revitalizing this local riverside community garden in Morrisania, making sure it remains a clean, safe, and fun place to relax, garden, and enjoy nature.

Collect Coats for the New York Cares Coat Drive or Give Gifts through New York Cares’
Winter Wishes Program

Registration is now open for New York Cares’ annual citywide holiday programs – the New York Cares Coat Drive and Winter Wishes. New Yorkers can sign-up to host a coat collection site for the New York Cares Coat Drive and/or request a letter to provide a holiday gift to a child or family in need through the Winter Wishes program. To register, visit the New York Cares website at www.newyorkcares.org. See below for more information about each program.

New York Cares Coat Drive – November 15 to December 31

Keep New Yorkers warm by signing-up to host a coat collection during this year’s New York Cares Coat Drive, which begins taking coats on November 15, 2011. Each winter, thousands of New Yorkers are forced to choose between buying a warm coat and putting food on the table, heating their homes, or meeting other basic survival needs. That’s why for the last 23 years, New York Cares has collected new and used winter coats each holiday season, and distributed them to men, women and children who would otherwise go cold. Health Plus is the Presenting Sponsor of the Coat Drive.

Winter Wishes – November and December

Help New York Cares fulfill the winter wishes of more than 32,000 low-income children, teens and families. Spread holiday cheer by collecting and reading letter requests and purchasing, wrapping and delivering gifts for those in need. Through this program, New York City families that do not have the means to purchase even the most basic gifts will receive them this season. New this year, Winter Wishes will also fulfill gift requests from low income senior citizens. Winter Wishes is generously sponsored by Robert Pohly and Julie Turaj.
