Director of Youth Services Sadie Mahoney has been recognized as a PASEsetter Award winner for her work as an after school professional and her impact on our Teen Center. The purpose of the award, given by the Partnership for After School Education (PASE), is to acknowledge “the best and the brightest of New York City's youth development professionals” as well as to highlight the impact that after school programs have on the lives of New York City’s youth.

"Recognizing these remarkable individuals is not only a way of thanking them for their tireless efforts, but also to recognize the necessity of after school in so many communities," said Fern Khan, Special Advisor to the President for Community Affairs at Bank Street College of Education and the President of PASE's Board of Directors.

The after school educators selected for the award receive $5,000 for their organization, a crystal award engraved with their name, a feature on the PASE website, and recognition by their peers as a leader in the after school field.

PASE is a child-focused organization that promotes and supports quality afterschool programs,
particularly those serving young people from underserved communities. PASE accomplishes its mission by building the capacity of individual after school staff, youth-serving organizations, and the field as a whole, with the goal of increasing the availability of high quality services to youth in out-of-school time.

Winners will be presented with the award at the PASEsetter Awards Benefit Gala on Thursday, March 1,2012.

For more information on the PASEsetter Awards, please contact Marcia Smith at

THE KINGSBRIDGE HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD FESTIVAL
And One of New York City’s Largest School-Based Service Efforts
Through the HORACE MANN SCHOOL
Present
Youth Service-Learning Day 2011
Saturday, April 16th, 10 AM to 3:00 PM
Mark your calendars: April 16th, 2011 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Here comes the first annual Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Festival, celebrating the multicultural heritage of the surrounding community with street vendors, ethnic cuisine, games, music and performances, along with community service and learning activities. The event will take place at the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center, 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, in the Bronx, NY.

The Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Festival will feature a street fair on Kingsbridge Terrace in front of our main building, with vendors, food, and games, as well as multicultural displays and events on our grounds. These activities will coincide with our portion of the Horace Mann School’s Service-Learning Day 2011–-one of New York City’s extensive school-based community service efforts. Visitors to the Fair will be welcome to take part as volunteers, as well.

The event, open to the public, will feature live entertainment in an outdoor amphitheater; children’s activities will be fun and educational, including puppeteering; juggling, dance, magic, storytelling in English and Spanish, cooking, and a Bronx oral history corner. Performances will take place in our amphitheater all afternoon, as well as inside our main building. Performers will include a rock band, steel drums, and Indian and Latin dancers; and karate and capoeira groups will demonstrate their skill.

This year the community service portion of the event will again focus on replanting our vegetable garden, mural-painting, and fun, educational workshops for young children presented by Horace Mann students. Horace Mann’s Service-learning Day includes a series of Northwest Bronx events produced in association with the Marble Hill Community Center, Van Cortlandt Park, Community Board 8, and other local partners. Since originating in 2008, the annual Service-Learning Day has developed into one of the most far-reaching community-service projects put together by any New York City school. For information on the day including activities at other sites, call Jeremy Leeds, Horace Mann School Center for Community Values and Actions, 718.432.4121.

The Festival will take place at 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, corner of Perot, just off the Deegan at 230th Street; near the Nos. 1, 3, and 10 buses, and the Nos.1 and 4 trains. If you are interested in participating as a multicultural presenter in the Festival, call Aisha Abdul Wahhab of KHCC at 718.884.0700 ext. 191. To participate as a vendor our Flea Market, call Sadie Mahoney at ext. 186.
