13 Bronx Schools Face Possible Closure by DOE

The list of struggling NYC public schools facing possible closure has more than doubled to 47.
The Department of Education has just added 28 new names to the list, including 15 additional high schools, six additional middle schools and seven charter schools. 13 or 27.6% of the schools on the list are in the the Bronx. The Bronx schools at risk are;

HERBERT H. LEHMAN HIGH SCHOOL TO RALLY AGAINST BUDGET CUTS

Here is information on a rally to restore needed funding for Lehman High School. NYC Councilman James Vacca and education leader Dr. Mark Naison will be present. We need to wake up before everything in our society is privatized. Mayor Bloomberg should tell the “fat cats” to eat less of our tax dollars and tighten their belts. Our schools need to be properly funded first. He should start with the “shelter system” scam presently being perpetuated. Keep your promise to renters and landlords by restoring the Work Advantage rent subsidy program and house people for a third of the cost to build 70 to 100 new shelters.

HERBERT H. LEHMAN HIGH SCHOOL TO RALLY AGAINST BUDGET CUTS

Herbert H. Lehman High School has a long tradition of excellence. Within just this academic year, students have earned 7.2 million dollars in scholarship money, and teachers have been featured nationally and internationally despite an “F” rating from the NYC Department of Education.

Bronx, New York -- over the last several years New York City cut funding to school dramatically. Lehman High School has lost approximately 6 million dollars over the course of the last 3 years. Mayor Bloomberg is proposing budget cuts that will continue to slash our programs – the very programs that have produced national and international recognition. Speakers will include Dr. Mark Naison, Fordham University Professor and Bronx Historian and Council Member James Vacca.
