It is heart breaking to hear thieves are targeting Houses of Worship. Fortunately, State Senator Klein is proposing legislation to help put an end to it. Kudos for Klein’s consistent tough stance on crime.

Klein (D-Bronx/ Westchester) will be joined by local religious and community leaders to unveil new legislation that would stiffen penalties on thieves who target religious institutions. The announcement comes on the heels of a rash of break-ins and thefts in the past month at Bronx churches and synagogues. The announcement will take place in front of Zoodohos Peghe Greek Orthodox Church, the target of a break-in and burglary on January 7th.

Fordham 99% Club Supports Hollis Community in "Reclaiming" Abandoned Buildings

From the video below it seems as if a Queen’s community is attempting to gain control of a swatch of “abandoned” buildings in their neighborhood. As properties increasingly fall into decay and the need for affordable housing increase, these types of land transfers could become more common much like they were in the 70’s when the "Bronx was burning". The legal details are not made clear in the video but even if the property does have a legal owner who is paying the necessary taxes on the property, should the ”community” be able to take possession of a property if it is meets certain criteria. Can parallels be made with the government’s uses Eminent Domain?

Another interesting point is the fact that the Fordham 99% Club and other 99% Clubs are supporting the Hollis Community in their Endeavour. Is this action one of the examples of how the 99% movement is evolving?

Community Fights to Stop Pavement of Nature Trail in Van Cortlandt Park

The Putnam Trail is a jewel, a treasure of nature in New York City.
The NYC Parks Department is planning major changes to the trail.

Current Parks plan will:
* Increase the width from 8 ft. to 15 ft.
* 1.5 acres of trees and natural brush will be destroyed and removed.
* The trail will be paved with asphalt.

The purpose of this campaign is to get the Putnam Trail resurfaced with a stone dust surface instead of paved asphalt and reduce the proposed width from 15ft down to 8ft. NYC Parks Department plans will double the current width of the Putnam Trail from 8ft to 15ft! The average lane on an interstate highway is 12ft. This will require the destruction of many trees and will have a detrimental effect on the wildlife, harming the natural environment and beauty of the Park. A stone dust surface still serve all the users including cyclists, walkers, runners, baby strollers, wheelchairs and more.

Park trails are meant to be user-friendly and accommodate all methods of use. We feel that the 8ft wide stone dust trail best meets the needs of all users while having the most minimal impact on the environment and will also have the lowest cost.

We ask you to support the Save the Putnam Trail campaign and ensure that the Putnam Trail stays 8ft wide and is improved with a stone dust surface.

If we stay silent on this issue one of the jewels of the Bronx and NYC will be lost forever. Please don’t let the Putnam Trail become “Putnam Road”!

Workers in New York City Less Prepared for Senior Years Than Rest of U.S.

NEW YORK, NY – A study released today shows a growing number of New Yorkers don’t have enough money to retire. Over one-third of older residents are expected to either subsist on Social Security, or not be able to retire at all.

The study, entitled Are New Yorkers Ready for Retirement?, is part of a research initiative by New York City Comptroller John C. Liu and the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA) at The New School. Using recent New York City and New York State metropolitan-area data, the report examines whether New York City residents are financially prepared for their senior years. The answer, increasingly, is no.

The study found:

· Between 2000-2009, the percentage of employees in New York City who had access to employer-sponsored retirement plans declined from 48% to 40% – below the U.S. average, which is 53% (2009).

· Only 35% of New York City workers participated in an employer-based retirement plan in 2009.

· More than one-third of New York City households in which the head is near retirement age will have to subsist almost entirely on Social Security income or will not be able to retire at all due to the fact that they have less than $10,000 in savings.

“It is a significant public policy concern when such a high proportion of the workforce will not have enough money in their retirement years,” Comptroller Liu said. “This report focuses attention on the need to help workers, both public and private sector, properly prepare throughout their working careers for their eventual retirement.”

The report found that employers have become less willing or able to sponsor pensions – a trend that is true across most industries and occupations, and affects New Yorkers of nearly all ages and income groups. The brewing retirement crisis cuts across racial, ethnic and gender lines.

“The deck is becoming increasingly stacked against New Yorkers in their efforts to retire,” said SCEPA Director Teresa Ghilarducci, Ph.D. “Fewer New Yorkers have access to the convenience and affordability of employer-sponsored retirement plans. More and more residents now face a choice between retiring into poverty or continuing to work in old age. Without significant policy reforms, the economic tea leaves foretell a decrease in the standard of living for retired New Yorkers. ”

The study was authored by Dr. Ghilarducci, a national expert on public pensions and retirement issues, along with economist Joelle Saad-Lessler, Ph.D. The New York City Comptroller’s Office Budget and Policy Bureau provided key data and analysis.

The main study data were drawn from the 2001 and 2010 Current Population Survey (CPS), the 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), and the 2009 New York State Personal Income Tax Files.

That’s why our office has combed through reports of children involved in the child welfare system who died in recent years. Our goal was to find trends and clues that will help us get to troubled families sooner and protect the most vulnerable children in New York City.

Our review of these cases showed that a majority of the children we’ve recently lost were the subject of previous reports of neglect and abuse—some had as many as 20 previous reports—showing the need to act on these red flags sooner. NEW YORK — Council Member Fernando Cabrera, city religious leaders of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds, and elected officials are organizing a mass march across the Brooklyn Bridge to take place Sunday, January 29^th, 2012. Marchers will urge Mayor Bloomberg and the Department of Education to reverse the discriminatory policy that will evict Houses of Worship from public schools on February 12^th.

“We stand firm on our position,” said Council Member Cabrera “Equal access for Houses of Worship makes New York City communities better. Mayor Bloomberg and the Department of Education need to see just how many people are on this side of the debate.” He continued, “We will be meeting at Cadman Plaza Park and then marching across the Brooklyn Bridge, ending in City Hall Park for a mass prayer vigil and remarks by religious and political leaders.”

Marchers are also urging legislative action. The City Council should pass Resolution 1155 which calls upon the New York State legislature to pass and the Governor to sign legislation amending the New York State Education Law to afford houses of worship maximum access to school property. The State legislation includes NYS Assembly Bill A8800 and NYS Senate Bill S6047 that would amend NYS Education Law 414 to allow Houses of Worship to meet in schools regardless of the “worship” component of their activities.

After the Supreme Court declined to hear Bronx Household of Faith vs. New York City Department of Education on December 5^th, 2011, the New York City Department of Education announced it would ban Houses of Worship wishing to rent vacant spaces from Public Schools during non-school hours.

Following the announcement, Council Member Fernando Cabrera and Religious Leaders have organized several protests. These include a Prayerful Protest on Thursday January 5^th, where Council Member Fernando Cabrera, pastors and congregants were arrested for kneeling in front of the New York City Law Department in prayer during a display of civil disobedience, and a Prayer Rally during Mayor Bloomberg’s State of the City address on Thursday January 12^th, where approximately 500 pastors and congregants gathered for prayer and song and over 40 were arrested while approaching the entrance of Morris High School in another display of civil disobedience. A press conference was also convened in front of the Tweed Court House on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, where 50 pastors, congregants and elected officials participated before marching to City Hall for the New York City Council Stated Meeting.

The January 29^th March on the Brooklyn Bridge will be the largest planned demonstration to date, as the movement gains national and international attention.

Councilman Fernando Cabrera has served the 14th Council District of the Bronx since January 2010 and as senior pastor for New Life Outreach International in the Bronx since 1988.

Assembly Passes Two Bills Sponsored by Assemblyman Dinowitz

Legislation Would Require Landlords to Make Repairs and Keep Tenants Safe, and Require NYS Health Department Commissioner to Act When Lead Poisoning Is Discovered

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) is pleased to announce that A.715 was passed by a unanimous vote in the Assembly yesterday. The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Dinowitz, would require timely and complete removal of existing building code violations within apartment buildings. The bill also would close loopholes that allow negligent landlords to retain control of rental property that they do not repair unless a court grants an extension of time when good cause has been shown.

Although existing law authorizes housing courts to replace negligent landlords with court-appointed administrators, the court often permits the landlord to retain ownership of the property if he or she promises to fix the problems “with due diligence” in a certain period of time. Often these landlords do not take any steps to remedy the code violations and their actions can result in injury or even death for the tenants of the buildings they own. This bill would insure that landlords must make necessary repairs in a timely fashion or risk losing control over the property.

“I wrote this legislation in response to the tragic death of a child from a fire which would have never happened but for the lack of court-ordered repairs by a landlord. The Assembly has again passed this important legislation, and I hope that this is the year that the State Senate will finally also pass it so that it can become law,” said Assemblyman Dinowitz. The bill now awaits action in the State Senate where it is sponsored by Senator Jose Peralta.

A.717, sponsored by Assemblyman Dinowitz, also passed the Assembly yesterday and awaits action by the State Senate.

The bill would require the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health to take action when an area of lead poisoning has been designated. Current law leaves such action at the discretion of the Commissioner. This legislation would strengthen existing law and ensure that when a threat is present, the Department of Health would be required to notify the public and take proper action.

“This is a very simple and straight-forward common sense bill that can have a direct impact on the health of young children. Any time lead is discovered in an apartment, action must be taken immediately. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to move quickly and pass this legislation,” said Assemblyman Dinowitz.

City Council Passes Local Law 75 Related to Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We hope everyone's New Year has gotten off to a terrific start.

In case you missed it during the post-holiday rush, this past month the City Council passed and Mayor Bloomberg signed into law legislation aimed at keeping New Yorkers and their families better protected from possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

Under legislation passed by the City Council in 2004, landlords were required to install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors for their tenants. However, the detectors that were installed after that law went into effect are now coming to the end of their useful life but tenants and landlords might not be aware that they are no longer functioning. As a result, many city tenants may soon be at risk.

Local Law 75, introduced by Council Member Mark Weprin, requires landlords to replace CO detectors when they reach the end of their useful life with models that emit an audible beep reminding folks that they need to be replaced.

Too many New Yorkers' lives are in danger because their CO detectors have died and they don't know it. This new law, which is scheduled to take effect in April, will help keep New Yorkers safe by requiring newly installed CO detectors to be equipped with an audible warning chirp.

We'd like to thank Council Member Weprin and his staff for all of their hard work and effort getting this important piece of legislation passed.

We'd also like to encourage all New Yorkers to check the dates on the back of their detectors to ensure they are still being fully protected by these potentially lifesaving devices. Audible Traffic Signals Unveiled in the Bronx

Here is one of those inventions that make you wonder why it was not discovered sooner. Audible crosswalks have come to the Bronx, thanks to Councilman Vacca and DOT Commissioner Connie Moran. Better audible crosswalks than a ticket generating cameras at every stop light.

Tomorrow afternoon, Council Member James Vacca will join Bronx DOT Commissioner Connie Moran at the recently-installed accessible pedestrian signal on Morris Park Avenue, just west of Eastchester Road, in order to highlight the fact that these important devices have now come to the Bronx. Beginning in September, the Department of Transportation (DOT) began installing these signals throughout the City in order to provide pedestrians, especially those who are visually-impaired as well as seniors, with an easier way of knowing when it is safe to cross the street. The devices emit a distinctive “chirping” sound when the pedestrian has the “walk” signal. As chair of the City Council Transportation Committee, Vacca has been an advocate for the installation of these important tools, and is proud that the Bronx’s first audible crosswalk is located in his district.

Residential And Out-Patient Treatment Programs That Affect Quality Of Life In
South Bronx Area.

On January 21, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., the community organization, “We Are Mott Haven!”, will be conducting a press conference to denounce the construction of a 60 unit apartment building which will be mainly used for housing people with severe mental illness (1/3 ages 18 to 25 years old; 1/3 older and 1/3 of chronically homeless people).

The organization will reveal the over saturation of government and private programs and institutions that are becoming a concern to the quality of life of the local community.
“We Are Mott Haven” is a group of South Bronx homeowners and tenants who have organized to stop the construction of this newest housing. Speaking for the group, Maxi Rivera stated, “We are not opposed to programs for those in need. We are opposed to the location, and the oversaturation of residential and out-patient treatment programs. The initiators of the project and the elected officials failed to notify the community.

The press conference will be held in front of where the building is being planned, 462-468 East 144th street and 475 East 143 Street (both streets between Brook and Willis Avenues).

LIU EXPANDS PENSION FUNDS’ COMMITMENT TO MINORITY AND WOMEN INVESTMENT MANAGERS BY $500 MILLION

Here is news on NYC Comptroller Liu making sure women and minority investment firms have access to NYC's investment funds. There has been talk and action on how to "open up" how NYC invests. Many feel that access to the investment funds are presently limited to a small "buddy boy" network of larger investment companies. Why not spread access to other qualified investment houses?

NEW YORK, NY – Comptroller John C. Liu today announced the New York City Pension Funds will seek to expand their commitment to minority and women investment managers by $500 million, which will solidify the City’s position as one of the top pension systems in the nation doing business with minority and women-owned enterprises (MWBEs).

“This $500 million commitment is another step in ensuring that minority and women-owned firms have more opportunities to compete for City business,” Comptroller Liu said. “It also ensures that the City has access to the best and brightest in the financial industry. When we increase opportunities, we increase competition and that ultimately benefits taxpayers.”

With today’s announcement, the pension funds will seek to grow their commitment to MWBE investment managers by $500 million – on top of the $6 billion already under management by MWBE firms. The funds oversee a combined $115 billion.

The Comptroller announced the increased MWBE commitment today at a symposium that for the first time brought together the pension systems’ asset managers with brokers from the funds’ Minority Broker Pool. The day-long event was designed to facilitate greater inclusion, utilization, and fair competition.

The Minority Broker Pool is a program that enhances the use of minority and women-owned brokerage firms by money managers under contract with the pension funds. This past October, the Comptroller’s office expanded the pool to 37 firms from 25 previously.

From the days of Greek and Roman Gods and Goddess through today’s X-Men, Dynamic Duos, Fantastic Four and many others, we are captivated by the Superhero (male and female). Is it their superhuman strength and power? Or their seeming selflessness to put the greater needs of others ahead of their own wants and desires? Or the fact that they may embody and magnify a single aspect of the human potential in each of us? The play is a comedy set at the home of the bride in Knoxville, Tennessee during the newly married couple's overdone southern-style wedding reception. The five bridesmaids have found refuge in the room of Meredith, the sister of the bride. The women come to realize, among other things, that they, despite their differences, have more in common with each other than any of them do with the bride. It's a raucous, raunchy comedic romp about life, love, men, marriage and intimacy as seen through the eyes of five very different, yet similar women.

Meredith Marlow: (early 20's) The bride's nosy, pot-smoking sister who is very sarcastic and much annoyed with the whole fiasco downstairs. Sporting an outwardly tough attitude, she has a lot of hurt and insecurity to hide.

Georgeanne Darby: (early 30's,) Tracy's "ugly sidekick" in middle school. Accepted the invite to be a bridesmaid even though her relationship with Tracy is strained because Tracy's boyfriend once knocked Georgeanne up.

Trisha: (early 30's) One of Tracy's former friends with a supposed bad reputation. She's been with a lot of guys, but not any that measure up.

BoogieDowner Tales from the Classroom: Designation as a “Transformation School”

We have heard some tough talk recently from Mayor Bloomberg and the NYC Department of Education on how the solution to the NYC Public Education crisis depends on firing the bottom third of NYC educators. The following e-mail written by a brave NYC High School teacher provides a front line account of how these words are affecting teacher and schools in NYC. In my opinion it’s not the 1/3 of NYC educators that need to fired but the 1/3 of DOE bureaucrats and their political cronies who help them implement these detrimental policies that need the BOOT.

Besides excessive test preparation in our classrooms, over emphasis on high stakes testing increases teachers vying for “better” students so that their jobs are not in jeopardy? Would we ever tolerate a medical industry were doctor’s pay or licenses were strictly dependent on the success rate of their patients? For example if you lose a certain number of patients you would lose your medical license no matter what the situation. Both professions are an art, not a science. Who would take the “difficult” operations? Who will take the “difficult” students? Students do not come to the classroom with the same natural skill or similar home environments, much like patients come into an emergency room with different ailments.

I am a teacher at FDR HS, one of the PLA schools. FDR has been a "Transformation School" since September 2010. I have been a Social Studies teacher at this school since September 1990.

Yesterday, we were summoned to the auditorium for a special faculty meeting. Our very well-liked principal, Steve DeMarco, conveyed the information he'd received from his superiors: the City intended to change our school to a Turnaround Model. The implications were not completely clear, but it almost certainly meant that we teachers and our supervisors would have to re-apply for our positions to come back in September 2012, and around half of us would not be re-employed.

This news was shocking and deeply distressing to us. We have done everything we were asked to do by State and City. We have learned and implemented new technology for the classroom, spent hours in Professional Development, devoted an hour a week to working in Inquiry Teams, decorated our classrooms with student work, differentiated instruction, and redesigned all our lesson plans to introduce the Common Core Curriculum. We have done this conscientiously despite the doubts many of us had as to the efficacy of these innovations.

The State has been extremely impressed by our progress, writing strongly positive reports, available on the PLA pages of the NYSED website. Our Quality Review last spring was favorable, and we raised our 4-year graduation rate last year by about 7 percentage points. Despite this, the City had decided to subject us to this awful and humiliating process, in which perhaps an arbitrary figure of half of us would be dismissed from the school. Our students were given letters to explain this to their parents, describing the school as "Persistently Lowest Achieving" and conveying the message that it is the teachers' to blame, and that the City will "measure and screen existing staff using rigorous standards for student success. . ." and rehire only a portion. One teacher commented in our meeting that distributing these letters to our students was "like cutting our own throats." I'm certain similar events played out in the other two dozen plus schools hit by this news. Regardless of his intentions, Bloomberg is seriously demoralizing hundreds of hard-working and gifted teachers, making it harder for us to enthusiastically adopt any future changes. He is creating a negative image of their schools and their children's teachers in the eyes of parents and community. The damage will persist long after this spat between DOE and UFT has been resolved.

Save our Schools is working with the Grassroots Education Movement to oppose high stakes testing. Parents in New York State, who want to have their children opt out of the standardized tests, do not have a legal right to do so. Below is a link to a petition to create that right for those who think it would be best for their children. I hope you can sign the petition and bring it to the attention of concerned parents, teachers, and taxpayers.

In recent years, New York State has expanded the use of high stakes standardized testing. We are concerned about the ever-increasing over-reliance on results from standardized tests to measure student learning. We are calling on Governor Cuomo, the State Education Department, the New York State Board of Regents, and New York's legislative leaders to develop and implement a process by which parents/guardians concerned about the impacts of testing on student learning can voluntarily opt their children out of standardized testing.

“In times like these - when New Yorkers of all races, colors, and creeds too often feel like their shot at the American dream is slipping further out of reach - it is crucial for elected officials to come together in the name of real change. This hard-wrought agreement will help a number of New Yorkers secure jobs that pay a living wage and I am grateful for the support of my colleagues and all of those who have been vocal advocates of this bill.

Special thanks are in order for Speaker Quinn - and her team who helped negotiated this deal - for recognizing that the issue of a Living Wage transcends politics. Although this bill will not solve all the economic and social challenges that so many New Yorkers face every day – poverty, hunger, and homelessness – it is a clear step in the right direction and I am hopeful that it will encourage leaders at all levels of government to appropriately address this issue.

Additionally, it is encouraging that Speaker Silver is carrying the fight against income inequality in Albany. NEW YORK, NY – Comptroller John C. Liu’s statement on the Mayor’s State of the City address:

“It was great to hear the Mayor support the Dream Act in New York. It would help unlock the potential that so many New Yorkers possess but can’t realize because of their difficulties gaining access to higher education.

“It was also great to hear that the Mayor supports an increase in the minimum wage, which would be in line with the enactment of living wage legislation for publicly subsidized projects. Both of these measures would help eliminate the increasing income gap that New York has experienced in recent years.

“We are disappointed, however, at the mere half-line mention of increasing opportunities for minority and women entrepreneurs at a time when only two percent of the City’s business is actually going to minority and women entrepreneurs. Clearly, more work needs to be done to level the playing field.

“It was also disappointing that the Mayor used the reduction in employee workforce headcount as a metric of success without acknowledging the ballooning costs of outside contracting.

“The Mayor devoted much of his speech to addressing some of the continuing shortcomings in our public schools, but his harsh criticism of teachers was surprising and unwarranted. They have faced years of demoralizing anti-teacher rhetoric. At the end of the day, the Mayor and all of us rely on teachers to do the hard work of educating our kids.”

OVER 40 PASTORS AND CONGREGANTS ARRESTED DURING BLOOMBERG’S STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS, WHILE PROTESTING THE CITY’S DECISION TO EVICT HOUSES OF WORSHIP

Here is the latest related to the debate raging over houses of worship and their right to rent space from public schools and or other city owned properties. Besides my past rants on the topic, it seems as if MANY Bronx residents and MANY elected officials agree that evicting these houses of worship is a real threat to the community.

From the list of elected officials below who support the houses of worship, I want to point out that it's not just the standard conservative “church” crew of elected officials that are making the stance against these evictions. Many of the more “liberal” elected officials like Council member Maria de Carmen Arroyo and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio ,who in the past have been steadfast supporters on “liberal” issues like marriage equality, also support the houses of worship in their quest to not be evicted based on esoteric philosophical debates or perceived threats. When local elected officials form conservative and liberal ideologies all agree on a specific issue, I think it’s clear that there position has merit. The Bronx public and our elected officials have spoken. If this is a democracy they should be listened to.

I am curious how Chancellor Walcott forgot about his "hands on" prayer service in the Bronx when he first becomes NYC School Chancellor which took place on PALM SUNDAY. Why has our self proclaimed messiah abandoned us in our time of need? I am sure we will see our present Chancellor employed by Murdock in some capacity much like our past Chancellor is presently employed by Murdock. That is, of coarse contingent on Walcott’s success on his helping to privatize our school system so Murdock and his associates can reap the benefits. In addition, I am sure the elected officials on the list below are prime candidates for frivolous press attacks by Murdock’s daily NYC rag; AKA the New York Post.

NEW YORK — Over 40 pastors and congregants were arrested today during a Civil Disobedience demonstration during the Mayor’s State of the City Address, according the Bronx NYPD representatives. The Prayer Rally was organized by City Religious Leaders and New York City Council Member (“CM”) Fernando Cabrera. The rally received public support from some NYS Senators, NYS Assembly Members and NYC Council Members. Present were: CM Letitia James, CM Jumaane Williams, CM Ydanis Rodriguez, CM Robert Jackson, CM David Greenfield, CM Maria del Carmen Arroyo, CM Joel Rivera, NYC Public Advocate Bill De Blasio, NYS Assembly Member (“AM”) Nelson Castro, NYS AM Marcos Crespo and NYS Senator Ruben Diaz.

Pastors and Elected Officials came together at 12:00PM to speak against the Mayor’s discriminatory decision to evict Houses of Worship from public schools, after Elected Officials spoke; Religious Leaders lead a crowd of 300 in prayer and song. At approximately 12:45PM members of the crowd began approaching the entrance of Morris High School to kneel in prayer, and were arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD). Approximately 45 individuals, in groups of 5-8, were arrested throughout the demonstration. The NYPD behaved courteously to the protestors.

“The theme of the protest was peaceful. We are here to make a statement. We have approached the Mayor’s Office to try to come to an agreement on this policy and we are open to negotiations,” said Council Member Fernando Cabrera. “The eviction of Houses of Worship from schools, especially from poor communities, is nothing but detrimental to the communities they serve. Houses of Worship bring so many tangible and intangible benefits to communities, that we just don’t understand the logic behind this policy.”

Bills have been introduced in the NYS Assembly (#A8800) and the NYS Senate (#S6087) that would change State Law to allow worship services in schools, and a resolution (#1155) supporting these bills has a super-majority of co-cosponsors (35) in the NYC Council.

“Houses of worship throughout the city consider this policy to be nothing short of discrimination, and we will make that known on Thursday,” said Cabrera. “I applaud the New York City Housing Authority’s efforts to work with religious groups that meet in their spaces, but the Department of Education needs to follow suit.”

Cabrera explained that the city is in perilous economic times and that houses of worship provide social services that take the burden off the city and its taxpayers.

“Treating houses of worship equally with other community groups helps our communities,” said Cabrera. “Evicting them hurts people and neighborhoods by denying them the social and spiritual services they desperately need, which in my district includes tutoring services, soup kitchens, and more. Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Walcott need to listen to what the citizens of this city want.”

The rally comes on the heels of the first big victory for equal access in New York City this year. Following a series of rallies and demonstrations organized by Pastor Dimas Salaberrios and other religious leaders (including a rally on Thursday January 5^th where Council Member Fernando Cabrera, Pastor Dimas Salaberrios, Pastor Bill Devlin and Pastor Michael Carrion were arrested along with three congregants): the New York City Housing Authority relented from its efforts to evict at least five churches meeting for worship services in the community centers of the city’s public housing properties. Pastor Joe Fletcher of Bronx Bible Church and Pastor Dimas Salaberrios of Infinity New York Church received calls from Housing Authority officials who told the pastors that the city is willing to sign long-term agreements so the churches can continue conducting their services in the projects.

“Churches and other religious groups should be able to meet in public buildings on the same terms as other community groups,” said Lorence. “These churches offer the people in hurting communities hope and help for their daily needs. To drive out the churches based on a discredited, extreme notion of ‘separation of church and state’ benefits no one and harms people who need help most.”

In December, after the U.S. Supreme Court denied review in the Bronx Household of Faith v. Board of Education of the City of New York case, the Housing Authority sought to expand the ban on worship services from the city’s public schools to include the community centers at public housing developments. ADF attorneys explained the relevant constitutional law to the Housing Authority and warned of legal action if it did not allow the churches to keep meeting.

Councilman Fernando Cabrera has served the 14th Council District of the Bronx since January 2010, and he has served as senior pastor of New Life Outreach International since 1988.
